About The Position

The Mt. Graham International Observatory is seeking a skilled and dependable individual for a full-time Trade Maintenance Mechanic II position. This role involves performing a variety of skilled maintenance, repair, and mechanical tasks at both the Base Camp on Swift Trail and the observatory site on Mt. Graham. The Trade Maintenance Mechanic II responsibilities include troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing facility systems, equipment, and infrastructure to ensure safe and reliable operations. Candidates should be comfortable working at high altitudes, driving in variable weather conditions, and performing moderately complex technical work independently and as part of a team. Strong problem-solving skills, reliability, and effective communication are essential. Requirements

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • In addition to the education and experience minimum qualifications, Apprenticeship program, technical training experience required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
  • Valid Arizona CDL with Tanker Endorsement. Candidates must be willing and able to obtain endorsement within 6 months of hire.

  • Technical trade experience in automotive, heavy equipment, carpentry, electrical, construction, or utilities.

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled-level work in one or more areas such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanics, HVAC, construction, or heavy equipment operation completing full repairs within trade area expertise. General preventative maintenance for non-trade expertise using a variety of equipment and working with other crew members to complete these tasks as needed. Examples include landscaping, infrastructure, utilities, vehicle and equipment upkeep, etc. Conduct safety inspections and verify that all equipment complies with university, local, state, and federal safety regulations.
  • Maintains facility grounds and environment in a clean, attractive, orderly, safe and healthy condition. Examples include plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanic, HVAC, etc.
  • Safe and efficient operation of equipment such as semi-trucks with various trailers, loaders, excavators, forklifts, and snowplows to support site maintenance, snow removal, material transport, and infrastructure projects.
  • Monitor and requisition replacement parts, supplies, and materials to maintain adequate inventory and minimize service delays.
  • Ability to work at 10,000 feet altitude and handle extreme weather.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs.
