About The Position

NYCAD - Trade Compliance Manager Position Summary: The Trade Compliance Manager leads the department in overseeing trade compliance and corporate logistics across Mitsui USA, its offices in the Americas, and Group Companies. This role provides strategic guidance and practical assistance to business departments on compliance requirements, customary trade rules, and logistics issues for both individual transactions and broader compliance initiatives. The manager is responsible for educating staff through training and seminars to enhance understanding of internal policies, relevant laws and regulations, and industry practices, under the supervision of the General Manager and Director. As the subject matter expert, the Trade Compliance Manager advises on customs regulations, export controls, economic security, and sanctions compliance, while collaborating cross-functionally to support global business operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in International Business, Supply Chain, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 8–10 years of experience in trade compliance, preferably in a multinational or regulated industry.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. import/export regulations, including HTSUS, ECCN, EAR, ITAR, OFAC, and sanctions compliance.
  • Experience with customs clearance, free trade agreements, and global trade management systems.
  • Customs broker license or equivalent certification is a plus.
  • Export and Sanctions Expert Certification preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with SAP GTS, OCR, or similar trade compliance software.
  • Bilingual capabilities, in Spanish, are a plus given regional trade focus

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and maintain compliance with U.S. import/export laws and regulations including EAR, ITAR, OFAC, and CBP, FDA, USDA EPA requirements.
  • Classify products using HTSUS, ECCN, and Schedule B codes; ensure accurate valuation and country of origin declarations.
  • Familiarity with Steel, chemical or hazardous materials regulations
  • Monitors the Trade Service Center’s (TSC) and the Company’s customs clearance functions and their compliance (on an operational level) with various regulatory requirements that affect Mitsui’s import activities with special focus on U. S. Customs Service regulations.
  • Improves the accuracy of import declaration of MUSA and Group Companies, through the review of LSC-Touch import declaration.
  • Lead or coordinate CTPAT Program Maintenance in collaboration with the Director.
  • Review trade documentation including commercial invoices, packing lists, air waybills, and certificates of origin.
  • Manage denied party screening, license determination, and recordkeeping in accordance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Performs internal audits of Mitsui USA and Mitsui offices in Americas and Group Companies import, export and inventory transactions under the direction of the department’s director
  • Act as the primary liaison with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and government agencies.
  • Design and lead internal training on trade compliance topics and regulatory changes for various Business Departments.
  • Monitor and interpret regulatory updates from CBP, BIS, OFAC, and other relevant authorities; implement necessary policy and procedural changes.
  • Support internal audits and investigations related to trade compliance.
  • Collaborate with legal, logistics, procurement, and business units to ensure seamless compliance integration into operations.
  • Lead sanctions compliance efforts, including screening, risk assessments, and escalation of potential violations.
  • BPR utilizing IT tools: Develops & implements technological improvements in order to enable more efficient monitoring of import declaration and regulatory issues, such as improving the current Work-Flow system.
  • Monitor and disseminate updates on trade and logistics developments to relevant departments : Remains informed of current trade and logistics issues and developments in the regulatory environment. Disseminates relevant information to all applicable Business Departments and Mitsui companies.
