About The Position

The Trade Analyst, reporting to the Manager, Supply and Trading Analytics, will support Sunoco’s trading team with short-term and long-term market fundamentals analysis for refined products (gasoline, distillate, bunker fuels). The role involves building refined product supply-and-demand balances, calculating arbitrage economics, tracking market trends, and preparing materials to inform trading decisions. The ideal candidate works independently, reprioritizes quickly during market-moving events, and communicates insights clearly to trading and commercial stakeholders.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in refined products trading analytics. Experience with US gasoline and distillate markets is considered a plus.
  • Advanced Excel; experience with Python and/or R strongly preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and communicate complex data.
  • Sound knowledge of statistical and forecasting techniques.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on collaboration.
  • Proactive problem-solver with a strong initiative.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for engaging across all levels of the organization.
  • Adaptable to changing demands and responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Fundamental Modeling: Develop and maintain short-to-medium-term supply-and-demand balances for refined products. These may include Canada, the United States, and Caribbean.
  • Trade Signal Generation: Combine fundamentals with statistical indicators to develop actionable arbitrage signals and forecasts that support trading decisions and term-contract negotiations. Incorporate weather and seasonality, competitor analysis, blending economics, freight, and compliance impacts (RINs, LCFS, Canada CFR).
  • Partner with data engineers by defining requirements/specs for vendor and agency data ingestion and validating data quality.
  • Quantitative Interpretation: Use R or Python to perform statistical regressions and back-test trade signals, providing stakeholders with data-backed price and spread forecasts.
  • Commercial Liaison: Build strong working relationships across trading, scheduling, and logistics teams to ensure all models reflect real-world physical and regulatory constraints.
