About The Position

The Total Rewards Manager is responsible for the design, implementation, and governance of enterprise-wide compensation and benefits programs. This role ensures total rewards strategies align with organizational objectives, regulatory requirements, and market best practices while supporting a competitive, equitable, and sustainable employee value proposition. The role serves as a strategic advisor to Human Resources leadership, Finance, and operational partners, providing expertise in compensation structures, benefits design, cost management, and compliance. This organization is an integrated, independent healthcare system with a strong regional presence and an affiliation with a leading academic medical center. It operates a full-service acute care hospital and a broad network of primary and specialty clinics across multiple counties in Northern California. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field (required)
  • Minimum 5 years of specialized Total Rewards experience with direct ownership of compensation and benefits programs
  • Proven experience designing salary structures, incentive plans, and conducting market pricing
  • Demonstrated leadership of merit cycles and compensation analysis
  • Experience overseeing enterprise-wide benefits programs, governance, and vendor management
  • Strong analytical, modeling, and reporting capabilities
  • Strong understanding of healthcare compensation trends
  • Proficiency with compensation analysis tools (e.g., MarketPay, PayScale, or similar)
  • In-depth knowledge of health and welfare benefits, retirement plans, and leave programs
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local employment and benefits regulations
  • Strong project management and multi-tasking abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • High level of confidentiality and professional judgment
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with benefits administration systems preferred

  • Master’s degree (preferred)
  • Healthcare industry experience with regulated workforce considerations
  • Experience with HRIS platforms, particularly Workday (compensation and benefits modules)
  • Benefits renewals, vendor negotiations, and RFP participation
  • Exposure to both union and non-union compensation environments
  • General HR or HR Business Partner experience alone does not meet requirements

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain salary structures, pay ranges, and incentive programs.
  • Lead annual salary planning, merit cycles, and market pricing initiatives.
  • Conduct compensation benchmarking and analysis using survey data and compensation platforms.
  • Support Talent Acquisition with competitive offer strategies and retention solutions.
  • Ensure alignment between job architecture, market trends, and organizational strategy.
  • Provide oversight of health and welfare benefits, retirement programs, leaves of absence, and workers’ compensation.
  • Manage relationships with third-party administrators and vendors, including renewals and RFP processes.
  • Oversee benefits compliance activities, including required filings and regulatory reporting.
  • Evaluate benefit offerings and recommend enhancements to meet the needs of a diverse, multi-generational workforce.
  • Oversee non-occupational and occupational leave administration in coordination with third-party vendors.
  • Interpret and apply federal, state, and local regulations related to ERISA, ACA, FMLA, ADA, and workers’ compensation.
  • Partner with Payroll, Employee Health, and Employee & Labor Relations on leave and benefits administration.
  • Analyze compensation and benefits data to assess program effectiveness and cost impact.
  • Develop executive-level reporting, modeling, and decision-support analyses.
  • Create and maintain process documentation and procedural manuals.
  • Lead communication strategies to improve employee understanding and engagement with total rewards programs.
  • Ensure seamless integration of compensation and benefits processes within the HRIS.
  • Support policy development and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
