SUMMARY OF POSITION: Plans, lays out, and performs all machine operations to sharpen, alter, and repair intricately designed and constructed tools, dies, fixtures, gauges, machine attachments, and mechanisms, requiring a high degree of skill and knowledge of tooling practice and application.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and Journeyman Tool & Die Status, as well 8-10 years of previous related experience (including apprenticeship hours); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience in bench repair, including assembly, machinery, up-keep, layout, die repair, inspection, press troubleshooting design, quality control, die and/or fixture building, welding, and heat treating.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, sketches, or computer-aided design (CAD) files.
  • Possess good verbal and written communication skills as they pertain to dealing with and understanding tools, dies, and equipment malfunctions.
  • Ability to perform basic shop mathematics; add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Responsibilities

  • Works from blueprints, sketches, models, specifications or other drawings to plan sequences for operations and machining, compute dimensions, etc.
  • Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances of tools, dies, fixtures, and gauges using measuring instruments.
  • Visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies, based on specifications.
  • Set up and operate equipment such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses, and saws to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.
  • Fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools.
  • Ability to effectively troubleshoot on deep draw tooling and progressive punch press dies on presses up to 600 tons.
  • Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects.
  • Design jigs, fixtures, and templates for use as work aids in the fabrication of parts or products.
  • Smooth and polish flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools, using files, power grinders, or scrapers.
  • Perform test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications, when necessary.
  • May assist in the development and designing of new tools and dies, using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.
