About The Position

Tool Room Manager Job Summary The Tool Room Manager oversees all activities related to tool and die maintenance, repair, new tool build, and continuous improvement. This leader ensures the tool room supports production by maintaining high-quality tooling, minimizing downtime, and driving efficiency in a high-precision metal stamping environment.

Requirements

  • 5-10+ years of tool and die experience in a progressive stamping environment.
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong competency with micrometers, indicators, surface grinders, CNC/Manual machining.
  • Ability to read die designs, GD&T drawings, and engineering prints.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and understanding of stamping operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Journeyman Tool & Die Maker certification.
  • Experience with automotive or Tier-1/Tier-2 stamping suppliers.
  • Experience with lean manufacturing or Six Sigma tools.
  • CAD/CAM familiarity (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar).

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and schedule tool room personnel including toolmakers, apprentices, machinists, and repair technicians.
  • Maintain a safety-first culture with full compliance to company and OSHA standards.
  • Conduct performance reviews and oversee training and skill development.
  • Oversee repair, sharpening, and preventive maintenance of progressive dies, transfer dies, and other stamping tools.
  • Troubleshoot tooling failures and coordinate rapid response to production issues.
  • Ensure proper documentation of tool repairs, revisions, and improvements.
  • Manage new tool builds, die tryouts, engineering changes, and modifications.
  • Work directly with engineering, quality, and production teams to improve tool reliability and part quality.
  • Approve tool designs, prints, and project timelines.
  • Maintain tool room scheduling to support production priorities.
  • Manage tool room inventory-tool steel, components, spare parts, consumables.
  • Implement 5S, lean manufacturing, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Ensure all tool room equipment (mills, lathes, grinders, EDM, etc.) is maintained and fully operational.
  • Partner with production supervisors to address tooling issues impacting uptime and scrap.
  • Collaborate with quality to ensure tooling standards support customer specifications (e.g., Toyota, other OEMs).
  • Support launch of new stamping programs and customer tooling requirements.
