About The Position

The job of a Tool and Die Maker at Wood-Mizer has the ability to analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, set up and operate machine tools, and fit and assemble parts to fabricate and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, and gauges to make new machine fixtures and repair or upgrade old fixtures, as well as make a variety of complex tooling needed for the manufacturing of our blades.

Requirements

  • Assist manufacturing with process improvements
  • Ability to evaluate a project and determine an accurate completion timeline
  • Must be able to work flexible hours and weekends when necessary
  • Good organization and communication skills
  • Strong weld/machine print reading and math skills
  • Able to use and develop a variety of measuring systems
  • Ability to MIG weld or willingness to learn
  • Ability to operate an acetylene torch/plasma cutter or the willingness to learn
  • Must be able to safely use various hand and air tools
  • Team player who can work independently
  • Ability to follow proper safety protocols
  • Ability to retain learned knowledge
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Vocational school / technical college training highly preferred
  • Machining/Tooling training or be willing to enroll in approved training program within 1 year of accepting position
  • 2 - 4 years in manufacturing or tool room environment
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds to waist
  • Must be able to stand 8 to 10 hours each day
  • Must be able to bend, stretch, squat, and climb on ladder to access all parts of the machine

Nice To Haves

  • Vocational school / technical college training highly preferred
  • Machining/Tooling training or be willing to enroll in approved training program within 1 year of accepting position

Responsibilities

  • Read prints and produce prototype parts and assemblies from prints or sketches
  • Develop, construct and alter a wide variety of jigs, fixtures and gauges
  • Perform assignments that range from the use of ordinary tool room operations to work involving accurate and extremely close tolerances
  • Perform preventive maintenance/repairs on product equipment, tooling and support equipment
  • Produce prototype units or tools to print specifications.
  • Design and produce tooling from parts prints
  • Perform testing and document results
  • Record all new fixtures and updates in the Tooling database
  • Carry out engineering level modifications to fixtures and parts
  • Operate any machine in the tool room such as mills, laths, drill presses
  • Expertly use various gauges and measuring instruments.
  • Assist Engineering Department with development of process improvements
  • Operate overhead cranes and forklifts as required
  • Maintains a safe and clean work environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Train other employees
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
