About The Position

The Tool Die Maker position main responsibility is to reduce unplanned downtime of manufacturing operations by supporting the preventive maintenance initiative on machinery, molds and tooling, including, but not limited to troubleshooting and performing time-sensitive repairs. This position is critical to have a strong background in maintaining, creating and repairing precision tools, dies, and molds used in the production process. This role requires a keen eye for detail, proficiency with various machining tools, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to self-manage workloads and standard assigned duties and to make decisions when troubleshooting material defects from potential compromised tooling. As well responsible to keep the tool room in perfect condition and under 6S compliance.

Requirements

  • Must have the ability to read and comprehend work instructions, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions in English.
  • Must possess good math skills.
  • Ability to work in a team building environment with other employees by build strong relationships with your team members, promoting trust, respect, and open communication.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as manufacturing, engineering, maintenance, and quality, to optimize workflows and resolve any production-related issues.
  • Ability to work on own without direct supervision, as well as follow directions and job assignments.
  • Ability to effectively communicate to machine operators, team leaders, line leaders, engineering, maintenance, quality, etc.
  • Ability to develop a working knowledge of the computer inventory system used to track tooling in the tool room.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings / blueprints and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Ability to machine process equipment parts to print
  • Ability to use and read depth micrometers, dial indicators, height gauges, calipers and micrometers.
  • Knowledge and understanding fits and finishes.
  • Knowledge and understanding of material, material properties and the ability to determine the proper material type and hardness for application.
  • Must possess ability to setup and program CNC equipment Mill, Lathe and Surface Grinder.
  • Ability to use both hands tools and power tools safely.
  • Understanding of lock out tag out, machine safety and MIOSHA and related safety standards.
  • Must possess mechanical aptitude skills, think logically and problem-solving skills.
  • Must possess ability to keep accurate records and computer skills including MS office.
  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Microsoft Office – Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • CMMS
  • AutoCAD, SolidWorks
  • CNC knowledge, read and edit G-code.
  • Familiarity with conversational programming (i.e. HAAS)
  • Must have 5 to 10 years or more as a Tool and Die Maker and tool room machining using mill, lathe, grinders, drill press and arbor or hydraulic press.
  • Must have 5 to 10 years’ manufacturing experience.
  • Familiarity with various machining techniques including welding, CNC operation, and tooling design.
  • Proficient in the use of precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Good machinist skills or machine maintenance skills with tool die preventive maintenance skills; troubleshooting experience for compound and progressive dies
  • Willingness to work overtime

Nice To Haves

  • Experience maintaining a tool maintenance program
  • Able to program CNC machinery and proficiency with CAD/CAM programs.
  • Proficient welding MIG, TIG and Arc preferred

Responsibilities

  • Comply with all safety requirements and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Ensure timely tool repairs and maintenance necessary to minimize downtime and to maintain production schedules
  • Work with outside suppliers as required
  • Design and fabricate new tooling and equipment machined parts as required
  • Organize departmental systems, procedures, and control costs for an effective operation
  • Follows quality system procedures

  • Arrive to work station on time
  • Leave work station on time, unless otherwise stated by the Team Lead/Supervisor
  • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of tools, dies, and molds for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, dial indicators, or any other metrology equipment to ensure accuracy.
  • Set up and operate drill press to drill and tap holes in parts for assembly using proper holding fixture.
  • Must be able to operate all conventional equipment or CNC machines in the machine shop such as lathes, mills, cylindrical grinder, surface grinder, hone, bench work, and heat treat.
  • Lift, position, and secure machined parts on surface plates or worktables, using hoists, vises, v-blocks, or angle plates.
  • Study blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies.
  • Select correct metals from a range of metals and alloys, based on properties such as hardness, durability and heat tolerance; for best application of use.
  • Lay out material for machining using instruments such as protractors, micrometers, scribes, height gage, gage blocks, V-blocks, angle plate and rulers.
  • Design jigs, fixtures, and templates for use as work aids in the fabrication of parts or products.
  • File, grind, shim, and adjust different parts for proper fit in both the tool room and on the production floor.
  • Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects.
  • Work with the Quality Department to ensure First Article parts are produced and pass requirements
  • Remove broken fasteners and repair damaged threads in equipment on either the tool room or the production floor.
  • Conduct test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications; make adjustments as necessary.
  • Fabricate various tooling per print specifications
  • Design, fabricate, and repair tooling and dies for production processes.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams using AutoCAD and SolidWorks for tool design specifications.
  • Perform routine maintenance on tools and equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to tooling and die production.
  • Follow and comply with Lean activities (6S, housekeeping, hygiene, etc.) to maintain a clean and organized workspace adhering to safety policies and protocols.
