About The Position

Designs high-precision progressive metal stamping tools and related jigs, dies, fixtures, gauges, and attachments for production or prototype use in metalworking machines. Prepares layout and detail drawings and modifies tool designs based on trial or production service data to improve tool life or performance.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of CAD systems (Solidworks, Autocad).
  • Knowledge of manufacturing equipment and processes, including plastic and metal (steel) dies and forming operations.
  • Flexibility and tolerance for constantly changing demands.
  • Ability to apply algebraic and geometric formulas.
  • Ability to read and interpret specifications and engineering blueprints.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize simultaneous projects.
  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or manufacturing engineering, plus 5+ years of related tool design experience in a manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare layout and detail drawings for single and progressive cutting, stamping, and forming tools.
  • Create and update detailed drawings required for manufacturing using the company's CAD system.
  • Create detailed 2D and 3D models of complex tooling, such as progressive stamping dies, injection molds, or robotic end-of-arm tooling (EOAT).
  • Work closely with the tool room to debug and modify tools, updating designs based on trial or production service data to improve tool life or performance.
  • Oversee the fabrication of tool prototypes and conduct "die trials" or mold samplings to ensure the output meets dimensional specifications.
  • Study specifications, engineering blueprints, tool orders, and shop data to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and cost.
  • Design EDM blocks, fixtures, and other layouts required for the tool room to maintain and repair dies.
  • Analyze existing manufacturing workflows to identify bottlenecks and design custom fixtures or gauges to improve speed and repeatability.
  • Create a bill of materials for all designs.
  • Determine the best materials (e.g., hardened tool steels, carbides, or polymers) based on wear resistance, heat treatment requirements, and production volume.
  • Follow ISO/IATF, safety, and environmental procedures as well as department and corporate policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with engineers, tool room staff, production supervisors, and other personnel in an effective and constructive manner to maintain positive relationships and ensure completion of responsibilities.
