  • Completion of Tool & Die Maker apprenticeship or equivalent experience (typically 4–5 years).
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings and GD&T.
  • Strong machining skills, including setup and operation of CNC and manual machines.
  • Experience with metal fabrication (steel, aluminum) and wood processing tools (routers, jigs, cutting fixtures).
  • Ability to use precision measuring instruments to verify tight tolerances.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in manufacturing environments producing commercial furniture, fixtures, store shelving, or retail display systems.
  • Working knowledge of CAD/CAM software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Mastercam, etc.).
  • Basic welding (TIG/MIG) and fabrication skills.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing and continuous improvement methods.

Responsibilities

  • Build, assemble, and maintain tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, molds, and gauges used in manufacturing metal and wood shelving components.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints, CAD drawings, technical sketches, and engineering specifications.
  • Machine precision components using manual and CNC equipment (e.g., mills, lathes, grinders, EDM, drill presses).
  • Fit and assemble components using hand tools, welding, and finishing equipment.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance, sharpening, and refurbishing of tooling to maintain dimensional accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot tooling issues during production runs and implement corrective actions to improve reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and production teams to optimize tool designs for manufacturability and safety.
  • Adjust dies, fixtures, and machinery setups to ensure consistent product quality for both metal and wood materials.
  • Support tooling changes for new shelving designs, prototypes, and custom retail fixtures.
  • Verify part dimensions using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, indicators).
  • Maintain detailed documentation on tool changes, maintenance history, and modifications.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, lockout/tagout, and safe machining practices.
  • Uphold high standards of craftsmanship, material selection, and accuracy to ensure product durability and consistency.
