About The Position

Purpose: The General Education Paraprofessional assists the classroom teacher and school principal by providing supports to groups of students at a school site in order to increase student achievement.

Requirements

  • AA Degree or Bachelor’s degree, OR at least 48 successfully earned semester units of college course work from an accredited college/university (must include 9 hours of coursework in Reading/Writing and 6 in Math).
  • Must pass criminal background check
  • Must provide proof negative TB test results
  • Must complete CPR/First Aide certification and Child Abuse training within 30 days of employment
  • Possession of patience, flexibility and the ability to work well as a collaborative team member.
  • Physical ability to bend over, squat, stand and sit for periods of time, and move with some speed.
  • Reliable transportation to work.
  • Prior experience working with children in an educational or other structured setting.
  • Skills needed to model appropriate behaviors to students.
  • Ability to remain calm during periods of stress.
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and manage time.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with school staff.
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism and direction from supervisors.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff.
  • Mobility to traverse all areas of work sites.

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred

Responsibilities

  • Plans and teaches small group instruction in the classroom under the direction of the classroom teacher.
  • Collaborates with teacher in weekly lesson planning.
  • Assists teacher with differentiating instruction.
  • Assists teachers with the management of student behavior.
  • Assists students in following classroom routines, working on-task, and completing assignments with increasing independence.
  • Clarifies, rephrases and repeats instructions for students as needed.
  • Collaborates with school staff in behavioral support.
  • Assists in the development of individual, classroom-wide and/or school-wide positive behavioral supports to students.
  • Assists students with conflict resolution.
  • Provides structured supervision on the yard during recess, lunch, before school, and after school.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
