About The Position

This position will provide thermal analysis and thermal system design capabilities to the MSFC Advanced Concepts Office (ED04) to support conceptual design studies, technology assessments, and project formulation for potential future NASA space systems. Personnel are required to be self-directed, effective team players experienced in working in a dynamic work environment.

Requirements

  • A degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited institution is required and a minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience performing thermal analysis using Thermal Desktop related to launch vehicle and spacecraft systems, design integration, spacecraft concept design, system requirements development, and technology assessments.
  • Expertise in Thermal Desktop and associated thermal modeling techniques, including the ability to create thermal models, define boundary conditions, and execute analyses to enable rapid design iterations.
  • Knowledge and experience in system modeling and simulation tool development (object-oriented Python programming capability preferred).
  • Knowledge and experience in conceptual design studies including the ability to develop study products such as mass, power, and size estimates as well as the ability to perform an analysis of the feasibility of the system.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering executive-level briefings, excellent oral, written, and customer relation skills, proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

  • Familiarity or experience with utilizing Model Based Engineering (MBE) and Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), particularly during the formulation or preliminary design phases is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize expert knowledge and workflow capabilities in thermal analysis tools to perform thermal design and analysis for the formulation and development of design concepts and approaches for a broad range of space exploration launch vehicle and spacecraft conceptual studies.
  • Use and develop thermal analysis tools to support launch vehicle and spacecraft design studies, system architecture analyses, vehicle performance analyses, and parametric system trade studies.
  • Work across organizational boundaries and engineering disciplines to facilitate and execute engineering tasks and resolve systems integration issues.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to perform trade studies, develop top-level requirements, and perform technology assessments.
  • Support Advanced Concepts Office technical activities by participating in management reviews, study reviews, providing technical advice, compiling status reports, and preparing technical documents.
