About The Position

FamilyForward’s Developmental Trauma Center provides mental health counseling services to children ages 4-19 who have experienced child abuse, neglect, or family violence victimization. Therapy Interns observe and assist in the provision of trauma-informed psychoeducation and interventions to help children navigate their social, emotional, relational, and behavioral challenges and assist caregivers in enhancing their understanding of and confidence in supporting their child’s challenges resulting from the experience of adverse life events. Therapy Interns also assist in the facilitation of therapeutic groups. Interns regularly attend staff meetings, including weekly group supervision and an internship cohort meeting. Interns receive weekly individual supervision FamilyForward is committed to upholding the Organizational Health Anchors that we have set for the agency, including safety; mindfulness and self-regulation; relational health; cultural diversity, inclusivity, equity, and anti-racism; clinical lens; vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue.

Requirements

  • Are enrolled in a master’s degree program in social work, counseling, family therapy, or a related field
  • Have compassion for children, families, and caregivers who have experienced adverse life events.
  • Are willing to grow your knowledge of developmental trauma to better understand our clients,
  • Are willing to increase your skills for becoming a clinician through observing, practicing, and active and reflective supervision.
  • Are able to enjoy using creativity to develop interventions for children and families.
  • Can develop trust-based relationships with children, caregivers, and co-workers.
  • Are comfortable supporting children experiencing challenging behaviors.
  • Have availability to work two evenings per week.

Responsibilities

  • Assist therapists in day-to-day functions of the therapy program.
  • Observe and assist therapists in individual, family, and group therapy sessions.
  • Conduct individual therapy sessions (based on intern’s skillset and readiness).
  • Accompany therapists on home visits to provide therapeutic services to individuals and families.
  • Complete assessments, treatment plans, and progress notes in the FamilyForward electronic medical record system.
  • Participate actively in weekly individual and group supervision.
  • Work independently and within a team environment.
  • Participate in administering and scoring assessment measures.
  • Engage in monthly team building and cultural humility activities.
  • Be exposed to the NMT through various learning experiences
