About The Position

The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist ensures, through planning, implementing, facilitating, evaluating, and documenting recreation, that residents are engaged in programs that will support, validate, and enhance their quality of life. The TRS plays a vital role in the Interdisciplinary Team, working closely with colleagues and the Director and Assistant Director of Therapeutic Programs to ensure an approach to care that is person centered and supports the needs of the resident's family. Supervising, teaching and coaching volunteers is also a part of what a TRS is expected to do in this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field
  • Eligible for certification as therapeutic recreation specialist or as an activity professional by a recognized accrediting body on or after October 1, 1990; or
  • Two years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years, one of which was full-time in a therapeutic recreation program; or
  • Is a qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant; or
  • Has completed a training course approved by the state of Florida.

  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with all levels of the work group, residents, families, and volunteers.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of the elderly.
  • Demonstrates leadership abilities.
  • Knowledge of documentation such as initial assessments, MDS, RAPS, progressive notes, and care plans
  • Computer knowledge highly desirable.
  • Able to speak, read and write English
  • Able to think and act calmly to meet unusual occurrences of the job

  • Participates in departmental activities, meetings and in-services and follows established guidelines
  • Maintains a safe working environment

  • CPR Certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates the therapeutic recreation programs by assisting residents during group activities and 1:1 visit, following the activity schedule, and aiding with transportation for residents during recreation activities.
  • Maintains documentation in a neat and legible manner and meets established department deadlines for recording documentation.
  • Deals appropriately with the special needs of residents and their families.
  • Plans, organizes, and assists residents in field trips when available.
  • Assists Assistant Director in training of department staff and attends necessary meetings.
  • Assists Assistant Director with chart audits when needed.
  • Completes mandatory monthly training by deadline.
