About The Position

Bowhead Transport Company is seeking a full-time, land-based Terminal Barging Manager to oversee operations supporting two marine vessels, such as tugboats with barges. This role is responsible for managing all terminal activities at designated locations, including coordinating personnel, equipment, and cargo handling operations. Key duties include receiving and loading cargo, operating heavy equipment (e.g., forklifts and loaders), completing voyage manifests, and maintaining clear, consistent communication with internal teams and external partners. The Terminal Barging Manager ensures that all activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with the direction provided by Bowhead Transport management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least one (1) year of experience operating cargo-handling equipment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience operating large Hyster forklifts or loaders, specifically in barge operations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise two 2-person marine crews under the direct guidance of the Director of Operations.
  • Maintain and execute the delivery schedule as established by the General Manager.
  • Coordinate and lead daily safety briefings and operational status update meetings.
  • Follow the established chain of command and company communication protocols.
  • Effectively manage time and prioritize tasks based on operational requirements.
  • Compile required documentation, including voyage manifests, dangerous cargo manifests, bills of lading, and other reports.
  • Maintain regular communication with Port Directors.
  • Notify customers of scheduled freight deliveries prior to barge arrival.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
  • Under the supervision of the Port Engineer, perform minor repairs and routine maintenance on terminal equipment.
  • Identify and report safety hazards; demonstrate a strong commitment to workplace safety.
  • Assist equipment operators with loading and unloading barges.
  • Organize and stage freight in the Bethel and Dillingham yards for M/V and line-haul barge operations.
  • Provide support to the Cargo Operations Manager during line-haul barge operations.
  • Maintain and foster professional relationships with community members.
  • Identify new sales opportunities in the region when time and operations allow.
  • Direct customer inquiries about pricing to the appropriate pricing team.
  • Coordinate and arrange crew travel logistics, including flights.
  • Ensure terminal cleanliness and organization at both hub locations.
  • Operate heavy equipment as needed to support cargo operations.
  • Assist with other company operations across Alaska, as assigned.
  • Demonstrate the ability to operate marine vessels or perform as a deckhand/operator in emergency situations.
