About The Position

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for performing preventive maintenance, repairs, inspections, and diagnostics on a variety of heavy equipment to ensure optimal functionality and safety. Equipment includes but is not limited to cranes, excavators, dozers, forklifts, telehandlers, air compressors, light towers, front-wheel loaders, UTVs, and trucks (½ ton and larger). This position requires effective communication, adherence to safety protocols, and timely completion of maintenance tasks to minimize operational downtime.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 10+ years of experience and/or relevant certifications in heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting parts manuals, drawings, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Familiarity with Lock Out Tag Out procedures, Safety Data Sheets, and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Must have or obtain a TWIC card.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license required.
  • Must pass all pre-employment testing, including drug screening, physical examination, and background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical certifications in heavy equipment maintenance are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to ensure all equipment is functioning optimally.
  • Inspect equipment usage and maintenance checklists periodically to identify potential issues.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and correct equipment deficiencies using proper techniques.
  • Generate parts requisitions for necessary repairs.
  • Work on systems such as power and drive trains, electrical, HVAC, fuel, emissions, steering, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
  • Remove, repair, or replace parts, major assemblies, subassemblies, and components as needed.
  • Conduct test drives and make adjustments to controls and systems to verify performance.
  • Provide recommendations to prevent equipment breakdowns and improve system reliability.
  • Perform adjustments and alignments, including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, brakes, and traction units.
  • Ensure compliance with engine, safety, and combustion control standards during testing.
  • Maintain detailed equipment records, annotating services and repairs on work orders.
  • Adhere to Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures and safety protocols.
  • Participate in all scheduled Safety and Health Training programs.
  • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain awareness of Safety Data Sheets.
  • Maintain effective communication with team members to coordinate maintenance and repair activities.
  • Attend and actively participate in daily, weekly, and monthly meetings or standdowns.
  • Assist other departments as needed and contribute to cross-functional teamwork.
  • Participate in supervisor training and skill development opportunities.
  • Assist in other areas of business as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
