About The Position

The College of Arts & Sciences (COAS) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University–Worldwide Campus (ERAU–W) seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor (Ph.D. required) of Technical Communication. This is a fully remote online position within the U.S. with no relocation required; faculty travel at least once per year is required to attend mandatory college meetings and events. Candidates will hold a Ph.D. in Technical Writing, Rhetoric and Composition, English, Communication Studies, Professional and Technical Communication, Writing Studies, or a related discipline. Candidates with demonstrated experience in aviation, aerospace, or engineering communication are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will join the Department of Humanities and Communication, where they will play a key role in the curricular redevelopment of Technical Writing (ENGL 221)—one of the highest-enrollment courses in the Worldwide Campus general education curriculum. This course supports multiple degree programs across the College of Aviation and the College of Arts & Sciences, including the B.S. in Engineering, B.S. in Aviation Maintenance, B.S. in Data Science, and B.S. in Software Engineering. Beyond supporting these programs, this position will strengthen the department’s growing academic specialization in critical artificial intelligence studies. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and teaching of courses that serve the department’s expanding interdisciplinary minors and certificates—such as Artificial Intelligence, Ethics, and Creativity; Aviation, Technology, and Society; and Science Literacy—as well as support the B.S. in Communication, particularly the Aviation, Science, and Technology track. The department seeks a scholar-practitioner who can bring career- and industry-specific expertise to technical writing while helping integrate critical artificial intelligence literacies into communication pedagogy. The ideal candidate will prepare students to write, design, and collaborate effectively within AI-mediated, data-driven, and technology-intensive professional environments. Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Technical Writing, Rhetoric and Composition, English, Communication Studies, Professional and Technical Communication, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated expertise in technical and professional communication, optimally as applied to engineering, aviation, aerospace, or data-driven fields.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching technical or professional writing, with experience in fully online and asynchronous curriculum and course development.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate emerging technologies—including artificial intelligence tools—into communication pedagogy and practice.
  • Active research agenda or professional experience in technical communication, critical AI studies, or science and technology communication.

Nice To Haves

  • A record of (or strong potential for) teaching excellence in technical, scientific, or professional writing.
  • Experience or interest in aviation, engineering, or aerospace communication.
  • The ability to contribute to the department’s initiatives in critical artificial intelligence studies, science and technology communication, and AI-integrated writing pedagogy.
  • A research agenda that complements the department’s interdisciplinary strengths in communication, writing, and emerging technologies.
  • Preference will be given to candidates whose teaching and research interests align with departmental strengths in technical and scientific communication, AI literacy, and interdisciplinary collaboration across aviation, engineering, and technology fields.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching modalities primarily include asynchronous and synchronous online delivery. A limited number of face-to-face offerings may be available based on faculty location.
  • Service responsibilities include participation on departmental, college, and/or university committees.
