About The Position

Under general supervision, performs tasks related to the operation of the department’s tennis program. Work involves coaching private lessons, group clinics, and youth summer camps; scheduling tennis leagues and tournaments; coordinating equipment orders; and processing payments.

Requirements

  • At least five (5) years’ experience as a certified tennis instructor, with experience in providing private and group lessons for youth and adults and organizing tennis leagues and tournaments.
  • Knowledge of the methods, policies, and procedures of the Parks and Recreation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Tennis Professional.
  • Knowledge of the practices, procedures, rules and regulations of the department.
  • Knowledge of the general office operations, functions, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the reports, records, files and letters, which must be prepared, processed, and maintained in order to meet the requirements of the department.
  • Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.
  • Knowledge of how to estimate time, materials and supplies required to complete various routine activities.
  • Knowledge of how to operate a variety of equipment and machines (such as a computer, calculator, radio equipment, etc.).
  • Knowledge of computer applications and the utilization of such in completing related tasks.
  • Skill in organization and human relations skills.
  • Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations, which occur.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others both in person and over the telephone in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to compile, organize, prepare, and maintain an assortment of records, reports, and related information.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and office operations.
  • Ability to read, understand and complete written requests and work assignments in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to learn and apply new skills needed in order to promote efficient completion of duties.
  • Ability to complete mathematical calculations as needed.
  • Ability to maintain an effective filing system.
  • Must be physically able to play tennis and provide tennis instruction.
  • Must be physically able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Position involves standing, walking, and/or running for periods, with little sedentary work.
  • Involves reaching and stooping.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to twenty pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Membership of United States Tennis Association (USTA) and/or United States Professional Tennis Registry (USPTR) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides private and group tennis instruction for all age groups.
  • Coordinates youth and adult tennis leagues, to include participant registration, facility scheduling, and fee collection.
  • Schedules and supervises youth and adult tennis tournaments, to include singles, doubles, and mixed double tournaments, including participant registration, facility scheduling, and fee collection.
  • Maintains schedule of all tennis programs and records of all tennis participation, lessons taught, league play, tournaments, etc. in recreation software.
  • Provides Parks & Recreation Assistant Director with a schedule of all lessons, clinics, league matches, and/or tournaments on a weekly basis, with updates as any additions or changes are made.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment required for the coordination of tennis activities and coordinates equipment purchases, as needed.
  • Supervises all volunteers and/or temporary staff needed to provide larger tennis events (i.e. summer camp).
  • Produces flyers, brochures, etc. and works with Marketing & Events Manager to publicize all tennis events in an effort to maximize participation.
  • Offers free clinics for youth and adults on a routine basis.
  • Inspects courts and surrounding facilities weekly, notifying maintenance staff of any issues and/or potential safety hazards.
  • Attends trainings and certification courses to stay abreast of current trends in the industry and the latest instructional techniques.
  • Maintains certification through the United States Professional Tennis Registry.
  • Assist with Parks & Recreation special events.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
