About The Position

Recreation & Wellbeing at the University of Wisconsin–Madison is seeking a dynamic, energetic, and innovative leader with experience in tennis instruction and facility programming to join our team as a Tennis Professional. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Tennis and includes a balanced combination of on-court instruction and administrative responsibilities. Approximately half of the role is spent teaching and facilitating tennis lessons and programs, while the other half focuses on supporting the administrative operations of the Tennis department. The Tennis Professional directly supervises more than 10 student instructors and 5 part-time instructors and indirectly supports over 25 Member Services student employees. Working closely with the Assistant Director of Tennis, this role helps provide, develop, coordinate, and enhance high-quality, engaging, safe, and inclusive tennis programs for students, members, community participants, and youth. The Tennis Professional ensures consistency in instruction, reinforces lesson goals with positive and constructive feedback, and clearly communicates and upholds all rules, policies, and procedures. This position also serves as a primary contact for individuals who are involved in or interested in programs and services offered at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. In addition, the Tennis Professional maintains regular office hours to support administrative functions such as responding to phone and email inquiries, updating website content, tracking program participation and records, assisting with payroll, and helping manage recreation software systems including Fusion, CourtReserve, and Connect2Concepts. The role may also assist with on-site coordination of special events, tournaments, and more than 25 additional events throughout the year.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years of experience in a position with responsibilities related to teaching tennis to both youth and adult participants of all abilities
  • Demonstrated success in articulating proper tennis skills to participants
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally (written and verbal) with clients and colleagues
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word & Excel or similar programs, and is generally proficient with other computer and web-based software
  • Experience working in a team and supporting colleagues
  • Experience providing strong customer service
  • High School Diploma

Nice To Haves

  • Experience planning and leading tennis programs
  • Experience training and/or supervising employees
  • Racquet Sports Professionals Association (RSPA), Professional Tennis Registry (PTR), or similar tennis related certification
  • Bachelor's Degree

Responsibilities

  • Schedules logistics and secures resources to support the operational plans of the program
  • May assist with the implementation of the personnel resource allocation plan including hiring, training, supervision, and resolution of personnel issues
  • Implements risk management procedures and ensures adherence to institution and divisional policies
  • Assist with the development and instruction of new and existing programs to meet the needs and fulfill the expectations of the department
  • Assists with the management of applicable software systems for program registration, sport management, and participation data
  • May assist with monitoring and auditing the unit budget
