About The Position

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County has an opening for Temporary Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention (SNAP-Ed) Nutritionist working part-time (20 hours per week) from the Buffalo, NY office. The Nutritionist will primarily be responsible for delivery of established SNAP public education programming to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among families and individuals encompassing all age groups throughout the Western SNAP Region (Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Wyoming, and Orleans Counties). This position will also assist with marketing efforts for SNAP-Ed programming in collaboration with other nutritionists in the SNAP region. This is a temporary 1.0 FTE grant-funded position expected to end September 16, 2026. Funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program is through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the Federal Food and Nutrition Services (FNS). Travel is required within the region.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Community and Behavioral Health, Health Education and/or Public Health. Associate’s Degree plus 2 years transferrable program/functional experience may substitute.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize existing program materials and educational framework to implement the teaching of the targeted number of both adult and youth participants in the SNAP-Ed Program.
  • Deliver high quality educational programming, partner, and community outreach to individuals and groups utilizing via workshops, presentations, demonstrations, and lessons existing SNAP-Ed program materials and resources.
  • Provide virtual and in-person programming which follows current statewide guidance for the safety of the Association and the community.
  • Create recorded video demonstrations and curricula-based programs to support statewide education efforts.
  • Under the direction and oversight of the Supervisor, occasionally apply established subject matter knowledge to create lesson plans as identified.
  • Under the direction and oversight of the Supervisor, adapt already established curriculum and materials as needed to meet established program objectives.
  • Implement already-established SNAP-Ed educational programing and program activities in support of other nutrition programming efforts as identified/needed to support the established plan of work.
  • Assist in providing existing information to bring awareness to the public in the form of impact statements, articles for progress/annual reports, and news releases, etc.
  • Provide SNAP-Ed educational programs via mass media.
  • Work to foster acceptance of the SNAP-Ed Program, methods and policies while addressing community and individual needs and considering diverse audiences.
  • Assist in multi-association team efforts through joint planning and program implementation of multi-disciplinary programs and program activities including, but not limited to: in-person workshops, digital education in the form of virtual lessons, and other electronic methods, as assigned, to deliver the SNAP-Ed Program.
  • Serve as a subject-matter resource in the area of Nutrition to staff and participants, community organizations and the general public.
  • Serve as a team member and cooperate with the entire association and nutrition program staff to achieve SNAP-Ed/Nutrition grant goals as well as overall association goals.
  • Represent CCE before the public, participants, community leaders, government officials, Cornell, or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.
  • Implement program evaluation as designed.
  • Interact with program participants, advisory committees, Cornell program specialists and faculty, county, and community leaders to obtain evaluation data for programs.
  • Assist in the process of analyzing collected program data for reporting and program improvement purposes using standard, established policy, procedure, and methods.
  • Assist with making recommendations for improvement/changes to strengthen and improve programmatic offerings.
  • Provide input in planning the structure of delivering educational SNAP programming via various methods.
  • Provide input to assist supervisor with planning program budget and needs.
  • Assist in the planning and promotion of public events and programs including, but not limited to, assisting with mass media efforts related to upcoming events and programs.
  • Assist in identifying and recommending program needs (i.e., program supplies and materials).
  • Organize and coordinate SNAP program activities (i.e., food demonstrations, direct lessons to adults and youth, etc.) to support delivery of established program goals.
  • Utilize existing program materials and educational framework to recruit the targeted number of both adult and youth participants in the SNAP-Ed Program.
  • Coordinate identified administrative aspects of the SNAP Program including, but not limited to preparing correspondence, maintaining files, maintaining participant records, etc. ensuring confidentiality of all information.
  • Coordinate, compile, and organize existing program resources and program materials.
  • Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.
  • Assist in utilizing effective marketing strategies in the promotion of SNAP-Ed programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, multi-media efforts and the environmental change initiative in collaboration with other nutritionists.
  • Maintain records, complete reports, accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required for the program evaluation process.
  • Prepare and submit accurate expense reports, mileage reports, receipts/supporting documentation, and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information and data collected, accessed and/or maintained.
  • Provide data and information to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories for funders, advisory committees, Board, and others as requested.
  • Travel within the region and transport program materials and resources in performing position responsibilities.
  • In cooperation with the Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.
  • Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and events as scheduled/required.
  • Support the association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Cooperative Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
  • Conduct all programming and activities in accordance with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Aware of, and adheres to, established Cornell Cooperative Extension Association policies, procedures, processes and Skills for Success.
  • Represent Cornell Cooperative Extension to the public, community leaders, colleagues, volunteers, members of Cornell University faculty and staff, government officials and the general public in a professional manner at all times.
  • Perform all assigned duties in a professional, timely, and accurate manner.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.
