About The Position

The Tahoe Institute for Global Sustainability within the Department of Biology at the University of Nevada, Reno seeks applications for a temporary Senior Specialist, Freshwater Ecosystems position. The position has a duration of 12 months with the potential for continuing depending on funding. The Senior Specialist, Freshwater Ecosystems will design, direct, and execute scientific investigations to advance understanding of freshwater ecosystem dynamics across space and time scales, requiring application of advanced scientific knowledge to develop experimental protocols and analytical frameworks for measuring physical, chemical, and biological variables in complex aquatic systems. The position exercises independent judgment in determining field methodologies, leading field campaigns in remote environments and on research vessels, while establishing equipment standards and maintenance protocols to ensure data integrity and provides scientific expertise to Principal Investigators in developing and refining research protocols while exercising discretion in adapting methodologies based on field conditions and project needs. The position directs the management and analysis of complex environmental datasets, applying advanced analytical and statistical methods to interpret ecological trends while developing data visualizations, scientific figures, and technical content for reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications. The scientist serves as a scientific collaborator and technical leader working with faculty, graduate students, and external research partners to ensure scientific rigor and research excellence across all project outputs, reporting to a Professor of Biology.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (in science related discipline) and two (2) years of related work experience OR Master’s Degree (in science related discipline) and one (1) year of related work experience.
  • Related work experience : Experience in freshwater sciences including but not limited to limnology, aquatic ecology, environmental science, oceanography, or a related field.
  • Experience in managing data, writing technical reports and/or scientific publications or related experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Frequent travel required, schedule based on research needs in mountain settings during all seasons (e.g. winter, summer, etc.)

Responsibilities
