About The Position

Provide support to the City of Ann Arbor Safety Manager and Safety Unit in the coordination, implementation, and support of the occupational safety and health programs and projects. Assist with and support the creation and development of safety policies and initiatives. Support safety and health training objectives. Participate in on-site safety and health inspections. Assist with the identification of safety and health goals and objectives and provide support for the development of corrective action processes. Develop and prepare incident reports, near miss reports, and hazard assessment reports. Coordinate, attend, and participate in safety meetings. Participate in the implementation of personal protective equipment programs and training, and with unit safety personnel on a wide-range of safety and health related topics and initiatives.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s and/or master’s occupational safety and health program or have earned a bachelor’s and/or master’s occupational safety and health program degree
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must have strong working knowledge of State and Federal laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to occupational safety and health management, including OSHA and MIOSHA standards.
  • Strong writing and editing skills required.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and accuracy
  • Demonstrate outstanding customer service
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and meet critical deadlines in a timely and accurate manner
  • Must be organized and schedule work effectively while working under limited supervision
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must have experience working with computers and software applications used in business settings (e.g., MS Office Suite, Excel, PowerPoint and Access)
  • The physical ability to drive, balance, walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, pull, push, feel, grasp, lift, talk, see, hear and perform repetitive motions.
  • The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Move and lift light objects weighing up to 30 lbs. such as specialized equipment, files and supplies.
  • Operating office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movements.
  • The ability to remain seated or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Position incumbent may be required to participate in, ride with or directly observe City employees in performance of day-to-day responsibilities. This may include, but not be limited to, climbing in and out of trucks and heavy equipment, climbing ladders, walking on roofs, climbing into manholes, extended periods of standing or walking, lift and carrying specialized equipment and walking over rough and uneven terrain, as well as working in all types of weather and surfaces to access work areas.
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
