About The Position

Established in 1926, Mutual Trading Co., Inc. was originally a small co-op organization for centralized purchasing of basic import foods to service the needs of the early Japanese immigrant society in Southern California. We've grown nearly 100 years old now, and command a premiere position among Japanese foodservice suppliers, as well as fill a key role as "Culinary Ambassador" promoting Japanese foods worldwide. Currently, we import, manufacture, and distribute over 8,000 Japanese foods, beverages, restaurant equipment and supplies.

Requirements

  • Business level English – Read/write/speak/listen required.
  • Able to work evenings or weekends as needed.
  • Maintain a positive and professional attitude.
  • Able to work independently and as a team.
  • Able to adapt to frequent changes in assignments and workload.
  • High School Diploma required; Bachelor’s Degree in occupational safety, environmental health or a related field preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in a safety-supporting role in warehousing, logistics, transportation, or similar environment required.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA General Industry fundamentals (HazCom, PPE, walking-working surfaces, incident reporting).
  • Comfortable being on the floor daily and communicating with employees professionally.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record; able to travel to local or nearby sites as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Business level Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Experience coordinating safety training and maintaining compliance records preferred.
  • Familiarity with transportation operations and basic DOT processes (accident reporting workflow, yard safety, DVIR concepts) preferred.
  • Experience with digital reporting tools (MS Forms, SharePoint) and/or systems like Samsara preferred.
  • OSHA 10/30 (General Industry) or other safety credential are a plus.
  • Knowledge of Japanese foods and liquors preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine warehouse/dock/yard safety inspections; document findings and track corrective actions to closure.
  • Support safe material handling practices and pedestrian/forklift separation controls.
  • Verify safety basics: housekeeping, exits/egress, fire extinguisher access, spill kits, battery charging areas, racking condition, PPE use, postings/signage.
  • Coordinate safety training and maintain records (sign-in sheets, rosters, logs, certificates).
  • Support new hire safety onboarding and ongoing toolbox talks/monthly safety campaigns.
  • Assist with incident/injury/near-miss reporting and investigation support, including employee interviews and report preparation (statements, photos, contributing factors, immediate controls).
  • Track corrective actions and verify completion/effectiveness.
  • Support Hazard Communication needs (SDS access, labeling checks, postings).
  • Maintain trackers and provide weekly/monthly status updates (training completion, open actions, trends).
  • Partner with Operations and HR to strengthen compliance and safety culture.
  • Attend Company events and functions outside of normal working hours.
  • Attend semiannual inventory count on designated day, possibly on a weekend.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Obligation to answer to all management as requested.
