Bulfinch Temps is currently hiring a temporary phlebotomist to work at the North End Health Center on Hanover Street! The Role is M-F 8-430, please note this is not benefits eligible but a great way to get your foot in the door! Job Summary Summary Under the direction of a registered nurse, works with the multi-disciplinary health care team in clinical support functions to promote a safe, compassionate patient care environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Graduate of training program that includes phlebotomy skills e.g. MA, Phlebotomist, EMT, CNA or equivalent required
  • Current Basic CPR certification required
  • Phlebotomy certification; or other accredited training program that includes phlebotomy course training required
  • Promotes patient satisfaction
  • Adheres to the North End Waterfront Health’s standards, policies and procedures
  • Adheres to infection control and hand hygiene protocols
  • Must be responsible for own professional development
  • Phlebotomy skills required
  • Computer skills required
  • Ability to work with all age groups
  • 5 or more years of prior phlebotomy work experience required

Nice To Haves

  • National certification in phlebotomy preferred
  • Epic experience preferred
  • Knowledge of Italian and/or Spanish helpful but not required
  • Comfortable in a practice environment/culture that promotes ongoing change toward process improvement
  • Demonstrates clinical competencies to manage POCT
  • Ambulatory health care facility
  • Supervision of other Phlebotomy staff in the absence of the nurse manager

Responsibilities

  • Assist with activities of daily living, including but not limited to feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transferring (walking) and continence.
  • Perform preventative skin care
  • Set up food trays
  • Feed patients
  • Assist patients with positioning, turning, mobilization, ambulation and passive and active ROM per plan
  • Apply pneumatic sequential compression sleeves and anti-embolic stockings
  • Adhere to standard precautions
  • Adhere to hand hygiene guidelines
  • Orient patient to surroundings
  • Ensure safekeeping of patient valuable
  • Pack and store patient's belongs
  • Check patients for ID bands
  • Respond to call lights
  • Provide constant observation for patients at risk for injury
  • Reapply soft restraints/ roll belt
  • Performs venipuncture and skin puncture on infant, children, teen, adult and elder patients.
  • Maintains, and updates knowledge of phlebotomy and specimen collection requirements including requisitions, handling and disposal.
  • Annually participates in hospital/NEWH required safety education, patient privacy education and skill competency verification.
  • Provides excellent customer service to patients and co-workers.
  • Checks patient identification against requisition prior to, and at the end of all specimen collection procedures by checking that all information on requisition (s), patient identification tools, and all labels are an exact match.
  • Locates vein and draws requested bloods following standard phlebotomy techniques; determines need for special equipment for problem veins.
  • Instructs patients in correct procedure for obtaining urine samples and provides patient with proper collection materials
  • Ensures adherence to schedules for timed tests such as glucose tolerance and drug levels, and special tests such as STATS, blood culture, and tests required to be obtained in a fasting state including POCT tests
  • Identifies a wide variety of tests; selects appropriate tubes for tests, according to the size and metric volume; estimates quantity of blood needed in relation to tests ordered; assembles all necessary equipment; obtains tubes according to the established correct order of draw; labels tubes with patient name, unit number, and date initials requisition; prepares samples for storage/transportation.
  • Performs guaiac on stool cards returned to practice in mail, sends results to patient and ordering provider.
  • Ensures specimens are ready for transport according to daily schedule.
  • Logs and records transport activity accurately.
  • Follows all safety (including infection control and hazardous material) policies and procedures.
  • Notifies Nurse Manager of unsafe conditions.
  • Delivers patient reports and assists in printing/collating of patient reports as needed.
  • Arranges STAT specimen transport to MGH or Quest Diagnostics when needed.
  • Knows how to respond to emergency in lab such as syncope with venipuncture.
  • Assists nurse manager with annual waived testing to other Phlebotomists, MAs, LPNs and RNs
  • Responsible for laboratory orientation and training of all new Phlebotomists, MAs, LPNs and RNs
  • All duties as requested by provider, nurse manager or designee
