About The Position

Minimum Qualifications 1. Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, or Career Development, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Marriage, Family and Child Counseling. OR 2. A license as a Marriage and Family Therapist ( MFT ) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to title 5, section 53410.1. OR 4. May submit a fully satisfied lifetime California Community College Instructor Credential in Counseling. (California credentials were no longer issued after July 1, 1990). OR 5. The equivalent qualifications. (Candidates who claim equivalency must provide conclusive evidence, as clear and reliable on the college transcripts as required on the District Equivalency Application Form. Refer to the Equivalency Procedures below. This is not a process to waive the minimum qualifications.) AND 6. Applicant must have demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff, faculty, and students. For DSPS COUNSELOR Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in rehabilitation counseling; OR Master’s degree in special education, AND 24 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work in counseling, guidance, student personnel, counseling psychology, or social work; OR Master’s degree in counseling, guidance, student personnel, counseling psychology, career development, or social welfare; AND either 12 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically in counseling or rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities, or two (2) years of full-time experience in one or more of the following: (A) Counseling or guidance for students with disabilities; or (B) Counseling and/or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities.
