About The Position

Helps patrons of the Nueces County Library to locate and use library materials, including computers. Operates the circulation desk, enters cataloging data in the computer, files library materials, and prepares computerized reports. Reports to the Library Director in the Robstown library.

Requirements

  • High school diploma (or GED certificate).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions and percentages.
  • Employee also responsible for keeping records such as overdue notices and files.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License or alternate means of transportation.
  • Must be able to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access programs.
  • Needs some basic technological troubleshooting skills.
  • Should have knowledge of library clerical duties, organization and operation.
  • Ability to work well with adults and children.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively.
  • Ability to type accurately at a minimum speed of 45 words per minute.
  • Should have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with organizations, schools, employees and the general public.
  • Ability to assist library patrons in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Ability to file and shelve materials using the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Must be able to function without direct supervision of the Library Director.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual ability to speak, read, and write Spanish preferred.
  • Money handling experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Sorts, shelves, relocated, and searches for library materials accurately and efficiently.
  • Assists telephone callers and walk-ins.
  • Assists patrons in using computers for reading and research purposes, including use of the Internet.
  • Maintains order and attractiveness of library collections through balancing, edging, and shifting materials.
  • Clears study tables and keeps furniture in order.
  • Provides simple directional information to patrons.
  • Regularly reviews shelves for accuracy of order, re-shelving materials as needed.
  • Assists patrons with technology use, including computers and copier.
  • Collects statistics and prepares reports to send to the Library Director each month for the Nueces County Library Board meeting.
  • Maintains reserve list, notifies patrons when reserved books have arrived, and returns items if not picked up within prescribed period.
  • Does simple mending of library materials, labeling and covering.
  • Assists with creation of displays to promote library events and materials.
  • Performs various clerical tasks, such as typing and making photocopies as needed.
