About The Position

If so, come join the Materials and Research team at the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT). If unable to fill at the Highway Materials and Tests Technician II level, will consider applicants at the Highway Materials and Tests Technician I level. Pay rate for this classification is $16.368 per hour.

Requirements

  • Highway Materials and Tests Technician I: High school education or the equivalent.
  • Highway Materials and Tests Technician II: High school education or the equivalent and experience in highway construction inspection or materials testing or other laboratory operations.
  • Must have a valid driver's license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Availability for over-night and out-of-town travel.
  • Knowledge of highway construction materials and procedures.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics relating to the material tests used in the Department including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to read and follow detailed test procedures, understand instructions, and apply them to practical work situations.
  • Ability to perform tasks repeatedly while maintaining integrity of results.
  • Must be able to safely move, drag, lift, load, and unload various objects, equipment, materials and supplies, with or without assistance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Laboratory testing experience.
  • Experience performing research, results recording, and data entry.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and log samples, prepare samples for testing, record test results, maintain laboratory and testing equipment, and clean laboratory, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Perform simple math functions to determine test results.
  • Perform tests on soils such as liquid limit, plastic limit, moisture density and similar routine tests.
  • Perform tests on asphalt such as binder content, density, rice, and similar routine tests.
  • Perform tests on aggregate such as wash tests, sieve analysis and similar routine tests.
  • Assist with field testing and sampling along with sample or equipment delivery when necessary.
  • Perform various other lab duty assignments.
  • Safely move, lift, load, and unload various heavy equipment and materials with or without assistance.
