About The Position

Transportation Engineer III Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence. Transportation Engineer IV Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, maintenance and/or [research]. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
  • Transportation Engineer III - 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
  • Transportation Engineer IV - 7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer
  • Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas,must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
  • Considerable knowledge of: Government programs and operations affecting highway and transportation development
  • Expert skill in: Research and analysis methodologies
  • Proficient skill in: Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
  • Planning, assigning, directing, coordinating and reviewing the work of professional, administrative and technical employees
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Evaluating products, equipment and material
  • Considerable knowledge of: Standards and specifications for bridges and other transportation structures
  • Risk analysis procedures and methods
  • Budgeting methods and procedures
  • Proficient skill in: Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long term deadlines
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to vibration
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates the performance of new transportation products.
  • Interprets maintenance standards, rules, methods, procedures, practices and policies.
  • Investigates materials failures or fabrication problems; reviews test data and assists in determining cause of failing materials.
  • Serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
  • Performs engineering analysis of statewide materials conditions and develops reports
  • Writes reports, specifications and test procedures.
  • Leads/Trains professional and administrative staff.
  • Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.
  • Monitors contractors' compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Provides assistance and technical support to districts, divisions and the FHWA in matters concerning bridge maintenance.
  • Provides information regarding innovative and experimental technologies to department personnel.
