This is a closing (evening) position and is required to do a Health Check/inventory of all animals in our care and general safety inspection of the facility. Purpose: Provides animal care, customer service, and mediates animal-related complaints.

Requirements

  • Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities
  • Ability to quickly recognize and analyze irregular events
  • Ability to adhere to disease management and safety protocols.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent plus one (1) year of work experience including six (6) months experience related to the job.
  • Any combination of related education and experience may be substituted.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License
  • External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite.
  • To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
  • The job offer is contingent on having a driving record that meets the City’s Driver Record Evaluation Standards.

  • Ability and/or experience to adjust and improvise to constantly changing situations and/or conditions.
  • Ability and/or experience to work unsupervised and work/communicate with after-hour authorities such as Law Enforcement Officers (LEO).

Responsibilities

  • Receives, handles, and kennels animals of all species including those of unknown temperament, aggressive, sick, and injured.
  • Maintains relevant written and electronic records.
  • Enters and retrieves information regarding animals’ behavior, health, and kennel needs.
  • Monitors animals’ physical conditions and reports illness and injury of animals to appropriate staff.
  • Attends training and maintains certifications.
  • Assists other personnel, law enforcement agencies, and other organizations as necessary.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and maintains animal kennel areas.
  • Provides animal husbandry as set by ASO procedures.
  • Performs daily and nightly inventory and health check of all animals at the Austin Animal Center location.
