About The Position

The Telecommunicator I is responsible for receiving and dispatching communications using radio and telephone systems to support Public Safety Officers and Airport Security Officers in responding to alarms and incidents. This role handles both routine and emergency calls related to crimes, fires, medical needs, rescue situations, FAA flight information, maintenance issues, parking services, and general inquiries - determining the appropriate priority, location, jurisdiction, and agency for response. The position also monitors the Airport's CCTV system, crash phone, and security systems, taking appropriate action based on the nature of each situation. Additional responsibilities include initiating work orders for Authority personnel and airport tenants, coordinating communication between Federal, State, and local agencies, and ensuring timely emergency notifications to on-and-off airport response partners. The Telecommunicator I maintains accurate daily logs, reports, recordings, and essential records, including employee data and emergency contact information. Must be available for night and weekend work.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Up to one year of experience in communications, such as emergency dispatch or other customer-facing roles involving interaction with the general public.
  • Must be available for night and weekend work.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of airport operations, phone systems, fire alarm systems, emergency procedures, and basic aircraft information, along with an understanding of departmental areas of responsibility.
  • Familiar with radio consoles, portable radios, security procedures and policies, the layout of airport property and buildings, and the use of access control alarm workstations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, customer service abilities, radio communication proficiency, and the capacity to multitask and prioritize effectively are essential for success in this role.
  • Ability to adapt, learn new skills, and handle several responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) certification, Tennessee Incident Based Report System (TIBRS) certification, and National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Use electronic equipment and a multiline phone system to support daily operations.
  • Maintain detailed electronic logs of calls and events using Microsoft Word and other computer programs.
  • Enter maintenance work orders into the airport's work order system and print reports from the airport reporting system.
  • Maintain operational records in various computer systems.
  • Contact contracted companies for escalator and elevator repairs and notify airport maintenance when issuing priority work orders.
  • Log lost and found items in the computer system and respond to related phone inquiries.
  • Assist with airport security by monitoring access control systems and operating surveillance equipment.
  • Utilize access control and camera software while handling private and security-sensitive information.
  • Implement the MKAA emergency response plan and dispatch first responders as needed.
  • Permit access to outside agencies during emergency or operational situations.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
