Job Purpose Install telecommunications owner provided equipment (set top boxes, ONT's routers, etc.) and perform associated tasks such as drop installation, both overhead and underground. Troubleshooting within the customer's premises, installation and/or replacement of cabling and equipment within the customer's premises, and limited troubleshooting of field equipment. Must successfully complete each step of the outlined apprentice training program in order to advance through each level of the apprenticeship to attain Journeyman status. This includes completion of NCTI courses for Tech I or relevant courses and on-the-job training. Specific Responsibilities Perform customer installations of all Owner provided communication services, upgrades, and downgrades of service, and limited field troubleshooting. Including: Install and set up communications equipment, including but not limited to set-top boxes, optical network terminals (ONTs), routers, PCs, or other computing devices for Internet access, phone service, and customer-owned equipment (DVD players, etc.) or other services that may be provided. Routing of communication lines, such as CAT6 cabling, fiber optics, twisted pair, coax, etc. Lines may be routed on the exterior, interior or within walls. Installation of outlets for termination points of cabling Terminate and test installed cabling. Installation and configuration of routers to support maximum coverage areas and performance. Troubleshoot customer services generally from the fiber demarcation point to the customer's equipment. Perform basic troubleshooting for service-impacting issues using diagnostic equipment for the drop, from the premise to the splice case. Ensure all customers are well educated on the product(s) installed and documentation is updated and completed. Collect communications equipment as required. Perform construction activities such as placement of underground and aerial fiber drops, maintaining approved construction standards for depth of bury or minimum clearance for aerial lines. and splicing the fiber drop at the NiD (Network Interface Device) Ensure vehicles are organized and well-stocked with tools, materials, and inventory. Other Responsibilities Maintain a culture of safety within the department. Support the Utility's safety programs, complete training appropriate for the position, and provide safe working conditions and practices. Maintain a culture of continuous improvement within the department. Utilize lean principles and other continuous improvement tools in an effort to maximize the efficiency of the department. Perform basic fiber splicing. Assist Telecommunications Tech II and III with troubleshooting and construction projects Ensure owner provided vehicle is well maintained and properly stocked with required material and equipment to perform job responsibilities . Other duties as assigned.
