About The Position

Provides assistance in teen programming, focusing on building essential skills like communication, decision-making, community service, and personal responsibility, aiming to empower them to become positive leaders within the youth center and their community; this includes recruiting participants, planning activities, facilitating workshops, and mentoring youth to foster their leadership potential. Serves as a liaison with Corps programming staff to identify and incorporate mission alignment and outcomes. May be required to transport youth. Participates in the Salvation Army’s ministry advancement by collaborating with the Salvation Army Officers to ensure Red Shield Youth Centers provide an engaging, enriching and empowering environment where youth develop Christ-like character, preparing them to become tomorrow’s leaders. Operational Standards: Assisting to ensure all Tier 3 Red Shield Youth Center operational standards are implemented and maintained. Program Implementation Responsibilities (80%) Manages a comprehensive teen leadership program curriculum aligned with The Salvation Army Red Shield Youth Center values, incorporating themes like character development, civic engagement, and career exploration. Implements engaging activities, workshops, and events that cater to diverse teen interests and developmental levels. Ensures that programs are safe and drive outcomes. Identifies and recruits potential teen leaders from youth center membership through outreach and promotion. Conducts interviews and assessments to select participants who demonstrate leadership potential and commitment to community involvement. Incorporates academic support and tutoring, in collaboration with Director of Education. Establishes objectives consistent with organizational goals and missions. Oversees the provision of day-to-day teen program activities in accordance with established standards and goals. Collaborates with the Director of Education ensure that teens develop key academic skills, including research and study skill. Collaborates with the Director of Education provides opportunities for college, career readiness, vocational preparation, and workforce development. Collaborates with Director of Teen leadership to review and update the supplies, equipment, and curriculum needed to carry out programs safely and effectively. Demonstrates leadership to assure conduct, safety and development of teens. Establishes and maintains organizational-wide program goals and settings that insure the health and safety of youth. Ensures the accuracy, integrity and security of all program data and memberships. Ensures that staff understand and effectively communicate standards of program; that they ensure program areas are safe, well ventilated, and well lit; and that equipment is maintained in good working condition. Collaborates with the Director of Education identify individual student needs and provide targeted academic interventions, including mentoring and counseling services. Facilitates leadership skill development workshops covering topics like public speaking, conflict resolution, team building, project management, and decision-making. Provides mentorship and guidance to teen leaders, supporting their growth and development. Safety/Facility Responsibilities (20%) Communicates and enforces organization’s policies, procedures and standards with regard to upkeep, usage and maintenance of program areas and equipment. Observes students and work with mentors and other staff to correct unsafe behaviors, to enforce safety rules and to communicate safety guidelines. Keeps facility/equipment in program areas in good repair and clean. Report needs to Director of Teen Leadership. Promotes cleanliness in program areas at program’s start and ending. Ensures emergency procedures are implemented and followed and take actions to prevent accidents Other Responsibilities: May be responsible for safely transporting center members and staff to or from school, activities or programs as approved, and is responsible for the proper reporting of maintenance, cleanliness, and safety needs of the assigned vehicle. Occasionally oversees special programs and/or events and/or participate in the implementation of other activities as necessary. Occasionally consult with parents concerning youth and center issues. May be required to transport youth. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Conditions: This job is performed in a youth center environment and out in the community. Time is also spent at facilities similar to youth recreational facility or community center. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and at times loud. Work sites are often located in low-income areas and challenging neighborhoods. Position requires employees to occasionally work with challenging youth and family members. Speak with or assist upset parents/guardians. Occasionally to frequently speak with upset external partners or community members. May be exposed to emotional outbursts from youth or their family members and may be exposed to germs and children who are ill. Physical Requirements: Must be able to remain in stationary position frequently. Occasionally move about the office to access filing cabinets, office machinery, attend meetings and the like. Frequently move about the community to complete job duties. Frequently operate a computer and other office equipment such as a copy machine, printer, and the like. Frequently communicates with staff, partners, community, and the like to conduct regular business operations. Daily operation and use of software and computer applications required for business functions. Occasional to frequent operation of a personal motor vehicle and operation of company vehicle relevant to carrying out job duties required for the position. Frequently spend time in intense concentration reviewing and entering information into computer. Ability to communicate with individuals utilizing a telephone, computer, or other electronic device. Ability to drive an approved vehicle to transport youth center staff and members in a safe manner obeying all driving requirements and standards. Position requires travel within the community and to participate in off-site Center events. May require travel outside of the geographic area of Center location.

Requirements

  • Associates degree or equivalency in education, recreation, social services from an accredited college or university or a related field.
  • Two years of experience working with teens or Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Position requires evenings and weekends as needed to supervise and respond to center needs and requirements, includes meetings, phone calls, texts and emails as needed.
  • Bon-a-fide Occupational Qualification (BFOQ): Must be over 21 and may be required to drive a center vehicle to pick up youth or drive for field trips
  • Valid State Driver’s License
  • Must be able to obtain CPR and First Aid certification
