About The Position

As SM Energy continues to scale its operations and embrace the next generation of digital oilfield innovation, we are looking for a Technology Portfolio Optimization Manager. This is a new, high-visibility role designed to ensure technology investments are intentional, aligned, and value‑driven across the enterprise. Sitting within our Business Improvement Office (BIO), you will be responsible for ensuring that our technology footprint isn’t just growing but is scaling intelligently. You will bridge the gap between executive strategy and technical execution, ensuring that every project from AI-driven optimization to cloud migrations is aligned with our long-term vision of operational excellence.

Requirements

  • Experience: 8+ years in technology leadership, PMO, or portfolio management, within the Upstream Oil & Gas sector.
  • M&A Exposure: Demonstrated experience in software rationalization or technology integration following corporate transactions.
  • Business Acumen: Strong ability to connect dots across disciplines from drilling to completion to accounting to land. A passion for the O&G industry and the ability to speak to stakeholders and translate their desires to technology.
  • Technical Familiarity: Knowledge of industry-standard suites (e.g., Peloton, cloud-based ERPs) and an understanding of how AI/Automation is impacting the energy landscape. understanding of project management office (PMO) structures and how they drive business improvement.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Computer Science, or Engineering; PMP, PMP, or MBA preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Technology Steering & Strategy: Facilitate the technology steering committee to prioritize investments. Own the creation and maintenance of multi-year Technology Roadmaps that reflect SM Energy's evolving business needs.
  • Portfolio Optimization: Manage the full lifecycle [CG1] of technology projects within the BIO. You will be the primary arbiter of resource allocation, ensuring we balance foundational investment with transformative innovation.
  • Strategic M&A Support: Play a key role in corporate growth by supporting technology rationalization. Provide the frameworks needed to evaluate legacy systems during acquisitions, helping the business capture synergies while ensuring we retain access to best-in-class technology.
  • Cost & Contract Management: Drive financial accountability across the tech stack. This includes managing vendor relationships, negotiating enterprise contracts, and providing transparency into CAPEX/OPEX spending.
  • KPI & Value Creation: Define and track the metrics that matter. You won't just track project "completion"; you will create KPIs that measure actual business value, such as ROI on new software deployments and system adoption rates.
