Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center seeks Technologist in New York, NY to perform clinical laboratory testing utilized for diagnosis and/or monitoring of cancer patients. Specifically, will perform general chemistry and special chemistry testing for metabolites and biomarkers found in blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, and other body fluids. Testing methods employ automated and manual procedures. The testing menu comprises over 300 tests, including, but not limited to: basic and comprehensive metabolic panels; hepatic function panel; toxicology and therapeutic drug monitoring; tumor markers (i.e., CA123, CA153, and PSA); endocrine function tests such as thyroid stimulating hormone ("TSH"), T3, and T4; serum and urine pregnancy testing (qualitative and quantitative); and hormones such as parathyroid hormone ("PTH"), adrenocorticotropic hormone ("ACTH"), luteinizing hormone ("LH"), and testosterone.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Medical Technology, Laboratory Science or closely related field
  • 1 year of experience in the position offered or related
  • NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License

Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical laboratory testing utilized for diagnosis and/or monitoring of cancer patients
  • Perform general chemistry and special chemistry testing for metabolites and biomarkers found in blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, and other body fluids
  • Review requisitions and orders, verify accuracy of corresponding specimens, and document specimen collection information in LIS
  • Review all test requests thoroughly for errors, omissions, clarity, and potential problems, ensuring test requests are appropriate for specimens received and that specimen meets all requirements before proceeding with accessioning
  • Prioritize STAT/RUSH samples, per laboratory guidelines, and follow patient identification practices per laboratory guidelines with 100% accuracy
  • Participate and promote the prevention, detection and resolution of instances of noncompliance with departmental and institutional policies and procedures
  • Ensure all laboratory procedures are documented in the Standard Operating Procedures Manual when performing testing, thoroughly and accurately
  • Perform technical procedures according to the required laboratory workflow patterns and in an organized manner to facilitate follow-up by other staff
  • Ensure Patient Confidentiality guidelines are followed
  • Assure the accuracy of all tests performed by adhering to the laboratory’s Standard Operating Procedures, including performing equipment maintenance and quality control tests
  • Operate equipment according to procedures, performing necessary equipment checks, performance testing, preventive maintenance, and quality control per laboratory guidelines
  • Participate in laboratory Performance Improvement/Quality Assurance projects, as assigned
  • Ensure data is internally consistent and meets QC guidelines
  • Recognize normal ranges and routine trends and results that may be problematic
  • Evaluate patient results based on previous results and data from other tests performed, when necessary
  • Record all problems with samples on QA Corrective Action Log, per laboratory guidelines
  • Help maintain commonly used equipment
  • Resolve minor equipment problems
  • Follow all infection control and safety regulations, per laboratory guidelines
  • Follow standard precautions for all specimen handling and disposal
  • Provide direction, training, and feedback on routine laboratory procedures, as assigned
