About The Position

The following duties are typical for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned staff: confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; creates and distributes work schedules; organizes tasks to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co-workers; assists with complex/problem situations and provides technical expertise; assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment; and assists with supervision of co-workers by reporting employee problems and providing input on disciplinary action and employee performance evaluations. Leads and participates in a variety of groundskeeping and landscaping duties: mows grass; plants flowers and shrubs; weed eats around signs and fence lines; edges curb lines; clears leaves, tree limbs and other debris from park areas; spreads and hauls ground cover, dirt, or mulch; prunes trees and shrubs; weeds flower beds; aerates and spreads grass seed; applies fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides and pre-emergent to athletic fields and turfgrass areas when needed; services and maintains irrigation systems; grooms, drags, lines, paints, and rakes ball fields; and removes snow and ice, etc. Leads and participates in general custodial duties at various parks and facilities: cleans parks, ball fields, restrooms, and other areas; hoses decks; gathers and empties trash; and sets up and tears down staging, chairs, tables, bleachers, etc. for events. Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives, reviews, prepares, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate various forms, reports, equipment maintenance logs, chemical usage logs and reports, safety data sheets, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records. Communicates with supervisor, City employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Operates or uses a City vehicle, and various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies to complete work assignments such as lawn mower, string trimmer, blower, edger, tractor, sprayer, skid steer, and other tools and equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • supplemented by three (3) years of experience in maintenance and repair of recreation or related grounds, fields, and other outdoor areas; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job
  • Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license
