About The Position

Provide supervised technical support to a research lab, performing a broad range of lab and research-related tasks pertaining to classical microbiology, basic molecular biology, and genomic analysis. Execute routine experiments using high throughput genomics technologies and Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis. Collect and process samples. Analyze genetic and sampling data. Assist in preparing material for publication, grant proposals, and scientific presentations. Maintain detailed notebook and lab records. Assist in overall general maintenance and support functions of lab. Order supplies, prepare buffers, media, and stock solutions. Assist with field sampling including on farms and processing facilities. Assist in educating students conducting research in the lab. This is a full-time 40- hour per week position at 100% FTE. One year term position appointment that is contingent upon available work, funding and performance. Requirements

  • High school Diploma and up to 2 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience working in a laboratory and experience with sterile techniques required.
  • Must be able to work successfully in a team-oriented environment. Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail required.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of students, faculty and staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of and experience with basic computer programs including Word, Excel, and email.
  • Ability to keep the equipment, materials, and lab organized.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours in the lab and off-site sampling areas (some early mornings, evenings and weekends) within the 39-hour work week.
  • Ability to lift 20-50 pounds.
  • Position requires some travel (<20%), typically within NY state.
  • Must have and maintain a current driver's license and be able to pass a driver background check.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree or other formal training program of four years or equivalent.
  • Previous experience with PCR and gel electrophoresis desirable.
  • Experience with sequencing bacterial genes and using software to analyze sequences helpful. Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and guidelines and prior experience ordering supplies and maintaining a clean and organized laboratory considered a plus.
