About The Position

The Technician I will be responsible for daily laboratory preparations for the introductory biology laboratory courses that serve over 3,000 students per semester. The Technician I will also plan and supervise technical operations, assist with personnel involved in laboratory preparation, and oversee the production and quality control of all reagents and solutions made for laboratory experiments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of related experience.
  • Comfortable performing physical tasks that require frequent walking and standing for the duration of an 8-hour shift.
  • Ability to lift 20-50lbs without assistance.
  • Must be able to wear lab appropriate attire and PPE.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field.
  • Ability to work outside of normal shift occasionally (overnight/weekends)
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment, scientific apparatus, and computer equipment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperative with others.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare reagent, media, cultures, solutions, and other materials for teaching labs. This includes measuring, aliquoting, labeling, transporting, storing, and ensuring quality control.
  • Testing and troubleshooting lab protocols before deploying them in the teaching labs. Identify issues and make recommendations to solve them.
  • Set up and tear down experimental apparatus and teaching demonstrations in labs. Including but not limited to preparing supply carts, moving and staging microscopes and spectrophotometers, transporting boxes, buckets and tubs of dissection specimens to labs.
  • Restocking lab rooms during the day to ensure availability of supplies.
  • Curate preserved specimens and preparing dissection tissues and arranges for lab demonstrations.
  • Provide care for plants and animals used in the teaching labs.
  • Laminates charts, posters, and information cards used in lab presentations.
  • Assist staff, faculty, and graduate teaching assistants as needed and assist with administrative operations as needed.
  • Transports packages or departmental supplies as needed.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair of lab equipment to prevent or resolve performance issues.
  • Troubleshoots lab equipment, computers, and TV's for teaching assistants.
  • Cleans prep areas, labs, cold rooms, autoclaves, and lab equipment.
  • Notifies supervisors of lab room maintenance needs.
  • Maintaining and following all laboratory safety protocols and assuring they are followed by students and teaching assistants.
