You will perform a complete range of both programmatic activities and administrative supervision. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate and programmatically supports the Nuclear Materials Technology Program (NMTP) in the Strategic Deterrence (SD) Directorate. You will provide complex programmatic support to the NMTP Plutonium and Tritium facilities (Superblock), as well as other Superblock facilities, and act as the interface between facility users, technical staff and other groups or organizations both internal and external to NMTP. You will enable coordination of work task priorities and ensure safety and compliance with fissile material and tritium handling operations. You will interact daily with Superblock, SD, Engineering, and Physical and Life Sciences Management. You will also be responsible for administrative management of the Superblock Radioactive Materials Area (RMA) Technologists and provide advocacy and resolution for this diverse group. This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level. This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

Requirements

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, or related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience with interpreting procedures for pressure and vacuum systems.
  • Experience providing administrative and technical leadership through the effective utilization of people and available resources, including budget planning and oversight, and anticipating and identifying programmatic needs.
  • Experience in mechanical engineering project leadership, including work planning, scheduling, drawing requirements, and reporting.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with Work Control processes.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in a high-consequence safety environment, including solving complex problems in a multi-tasked environment, often with minimal instruction and direction.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with people at all levels and ensure that program requirements are conveyed in a timely manner.
  • Ability to travel to Nuclear Security and DoD Sites in support of program missions.
  • Extensive experience working in, leading, and supervising multidisciplinary teams to meet project requirements and deadlines.
  • Highly advanced analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, and significant experience making independent fundamental decisions and developing solutions regarding highly complex technical problems.
  • Highly advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to supervise a team, present/explain technical knowledge, provide feedback, and advise management, regulators, reviewers and stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience preparing performance management documents and participating in ranking and salary processes.
  • Experience with radiological worker operations and procedures and with nuclear weapons technology.
  • Vacuum Systems and Leak Detection experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide complex direct programmatic support of work conducted within the Superblock facilities.
  • Perform personnel related functions, including recruiting, hiring, and retention activities, performance evaluation and alignment, salary management, influencing the work environment to foster staff development, employee morale, and well-being, and making recommendations on promotion and disciplinary actions for a team of roughly 10.
  • Manage technical staff and collaborate, by providing input, developing solutions, implementing improvements, and planning and executing activities to maximize the effectiveness of the Superblock facilities in the conduct and successful accomplishment of work performed in the RMA.
  • Review, advise, provide guidance, and make determinations on training qualifications for fissile material handler certifications.
  • Participate in planning, decision making, and change processes, including modifying guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
  • Participate in reviews, fissile material handler development and implementation, all phases of work control processes, and other activities to support technical and administrative assignments.
  • Collaborate with the technical staff to define functional requirements, solve complex technical and resource problems, and evaluate alternative design concepts consistent with schedule, cost, and material limitations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Provide highly advanced technical and related administrative support, expertise, guidance, and advice in the areas of applied engineering technology, including planning, design, fabrication, project support, testing, and evaluation where the qualitative and quantitative complexity of the project assignments demand original and innovative problem solutions.
  • Utilize a high degree of independent discretion and judgment in making frequent complex decisions, and in providing direction to technical staff.
  • Represent division and program at meetings, briefings, and other activities both internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Communicate and inform management and appropriate outside collaborators of project status, budget, schedule, and workforce effort levels.
  • Mentor subordinate personnel/team members for leadership succession planning and provide career development and technical guidance.
  • Assess, determine, and direct staff training requirements, efforts, and opportunities.
  • Partner with Administrative and Programmatic Senior Leadership for long-range strategic planning to establish and ensure department’s missions, goals and work activities are met.
