About The Position

The Supervisor Technical Laboratory is a working supervisor responsible for overseeing daily operations in assigned technical areas of the hospital laboratory. This individual performs complex testing, assists with workflow management, and ensures that laboratory practices meet clinical and regulatory standards. The Supervisor ensures accurate, timely testing and reporting, supports and trains staff, and promotes optimal patient care through leadership and technical expertise. May specialize in Microbiology, Core Laboratory, Blood Bank or off shift activities.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related scientific field from an accredited institution and Completion of an approved medical technology training program.
Must hold a valid New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist license.
4 years of experience as a Medical Technologist in a clinical laboratory setting.
Proficiency in assessing, interpreting, and validating clinical laboratory data.
Familiarity with NYS DOH and DNV laboratory standards and compliance requirements.
Ability to lead, guide and support a team in a fast-paced, patient-focused environment.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make decisions under pressure.
Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
Demonstrated ability to train and evaluate laboratory staff effectively.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Proficient with MS Office and able to learn new software.

Responsibilities

Performs laboratory testing on patient specimens using standardized and approved methodologies.
Accepts or rejects specimens according to established policies; ensures proper labeling, storage, and transportation of specimens.
Interprets test results for accuracy and clinical acceptability, correlating data with common physiological and pathological conditions.
Prioritizes laboratory work and coordinates workflow to meet patient care needs and turnaround time expectations.
Assists staff in troubleshooting and maintaining workflow, providing technical support as needed.
Ensures that all procedures, documentation, and operations comply with New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH) and DNV accreditation standards and MVHS policies and procedures.
Supports maintenance, calibration, and performance verification of laboratory instrumentation to ensure functionality and compliance with manufacturer specifications.
Ensure the timely completion of instrument-to-instrument correlations, quality control, and proficiency testing activities.
Trains and orients new staff; ensures ongoing staff competency and adherence to department policies and procedures.
Keeps department leadership updated of concerns, issues and progress towards goals.
Participates in the development and review of quality improvement initiatives.
With the Manager and Human Resources guidance, provides input to or makes recommendations on employee hires, performance reviews, transfers, promotions, salary changes, disciplinary actions, terminations and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other staff problems in a fair, timely and consistent manner also in conjunction with HR.
