Under the supervision of the Cataloging and Metadata Librarian and the E-resources and Digital Repository Librarian, the Technical Services and Digital Initiatives Library Assistant (officially classified as Library Assistant II) performs the processes for receiving mail; processing, distributing, and renewing print journals and newspapers; processing new materials for collections; stacks maintenance; catalog record maintenance; and digitizing materials for the library digital repository.   • Sorts mail for distribution
  • Processes and distributes print journals and newspapers, and updates online periodicals records
  • Works with Acquisitions group to renew print periodicals and newspapers
  • Physically processes books and materials for collections (covering books, adding bar codes, spine labels, and security strips, stamping)
  • Works with Access Services and Cataloging groups to shift and maintain library stacks, repair damaged items, process withdrawals, and update catalog records
  • Maintains holdings binder, fills requests for articles from microform collection, and maintains microform reader-printer and other scanning and copying equipment
  • Works with Cataloging and E-resources librarians to establish, document, and implement digitization guidelines and workflow procedures to digitize content
  • Operates equipment to produce high-quality digital images of library, University, faculty, and other content for incorporation into the library digital repository
  • Works with Cataloging Librarian to create and update catalog records for digital content and maintain digital collections
  • Prepares reports as needed
  • Staffs library front desk as needed
  • Participates in library and University committees
  • Assists with other duties as assigned by supervisors
  • Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time paraprofessional or clerical experience as a library assistant, or (B) any combination of the required experience and the substitution below.
  • An Associate's degree or higher may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail
  • Proven ability to work independently
  • Ability to follow-through and resolve problems/issues to completion
  • Excellent knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to understand and apply Library and University procedures and guidelines governing the purchase and disposition of library materials and equipment
  • Ability to prepare general reports
  • Strong communication skills.
