The Technical Laboratory Assistant (TLA) role involves performing phlebotomy and a variety of technical and clerical functions within the Laboratory, with duties adapting to the specific needs of each campus. This position requires the execution of routine laboratory procedures, guided by principles of human growth and development and established lab guidelines. Key attributes for this role include a strong customer focus, teamwork, adaptability to change, problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a commitment to personal excellence. The TLA will handle various biological specimens such as blood, tissue, fecal matter, sputum, urine, spinal fluid, and other body fluids. It is important to note that these specimens may be contaminated with infectious diseases, including HIV and other bloodborne pathogens. Requirements

  • High School or GED (Required)
  • DL - Driver's License - Department of Motor Vehicles (Required for Associates working in a skilled nursing facility setting)
  • Carry personal auto insurance (Required for Associates working in a skilled nursing facility setting)

  • 6 months - 1 year experience in phlebotomy and/or specimen processing

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy and/or specimen processing depending on job location (70% of duties).
  • Adhere to Safety and Infection Control practices.
  • Provide customer service to clinicians and clients.
  • Be comfortable and professional on the telephone, able to communicate with physician office staff and clinical staff, and laboratory associates.
  • Communicate with patients and their families, and use service recovery where necessary.
  • Perform associated computer related tasks (i.e. LIS, e-Source) (15% of duties).
  • Train new employees and students (5% of duties).
  • Adhere to regulatory compliance including National Patient Safety Goals, CAP, OSHA, JCAHO, CMS, OSH and Laboratory Policies and Procedures (5% of duties).
  • Maintain competencies, mandatory required education (ACE) (5% of duties).
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned.
  • Focus on safety, quality and efficiency in performing job duties as a High Reliability Organization (HRO).
