PRIMARY FUNCTION: The position carries a duel role with primary functions covering both nursing and clerical responsibilities. Under nursing, the primary function is to perform hygiene/comfort measures and selected nursing and phlebotomy procedures for patients under the supervision and direction of the professional nurse. When in the clerical role, the primary function is to promote proactive administrative services such as that of a receptionist, registrar, data entry clerk, order entry clerk and liaison to ancillary departments and outside agencies to facilitate effective patient care. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Demonstrates skills and knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to neonatal, adolescent, adult, geriatric patients, including knowledge of growth and development. The ability to obtain information to identity patient needs and to provide care as needed. Performs assigned nursing procedures that pertain to the comfort and well-being of patients. Responds to patient crisis situations and initiatives interventions within the scope of responsibilities and notifies RN. Performs successful venipuncture and finger sticks on adult patients, following all standard laboratory safety policies. Performs defined procedures on point of care instrumentation. Responds with promptness, empathy and interest to needs of patients. Communicates to patients, employees, and physicians utilizing courteous verbal and written communications skills. Completes mandatory inservice education Performs essential unit specific tasks under the direction of RN, e.g. height and weight measurement. Handles communication in the various areas of OB Triage, Labor and Delivery and 3A, 3B. 3C, and 4B using CCHS telephone etiquette policy. Receives records and relays messages promptly and courteously. Makes 911 calls for OB Emergencies e.g. Stat C/S, OBERT, NICU Alert, PP Hemorrhage. Fetal Heart Rate Alerts/ Codes, Code Blue, Code Yellow (infant abduction) and other related emergency code calls. Places calls to physicians for patient disposition as requested. Adds and moves patients in OB Information System ( OBIS) Facilitates patient and visitor flow. Demonstrates knowledge of facility regulations regarding visitors and confidentiality status. Receives and disperses inter- and intra-departmental communications. Directs physicians to appropriate nursing personnel for physician orders. Performs duties related to admission/discharge/transfer using the Soarian system including initial registration of emergency patients ( quick-reg) Reviews orders placed for patient testing and enters and sends lab specimens using the PowerChart system. Prints records as requested by physician and nursing from MMF. Print records as requested by physician from Access Anywhere and Centricity Systems. Assists in precepting of new OB Triage employees. Actively participates OB Triage and VIT teams, councils and committees. Assists with records, reports, forms, and chart preparation/assembling. Assists administrative residents with follow-up including sending letters and faxes to physicians and outside agencies and other health care facilities. Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices. Reports to supervisor any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and/or visitors. Performs other related duties as required. SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS: Daily contact with patients, family members, visitors, employees, medical staff/providers, ancillary departments, volunteers and students.
