Purpose: Co-develop the field strategy with Affiliate TA to ensure alignment and integration of medical brand plan. Oversee the deployment of tactical field plans for engagement with the medical/scientific community. Lead, manage, and develop the MSL team to become a trusted advisor for scientific exchange to external stakeholders.

Requirements

  • US: Doctorate Degree in Health-Related Sciences: i.e.: MD, PhD, PharmD, DNP, DO
  • Minimum 5 years scientific/medical experience in research-based pharmaceutical industry in the areas of Medical Affairs or Development

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic leadership and direction across all functions of the MSL department to ensure all field medical deliverables are based on scientific validity, clinical importance, fiscal feasibility and aligned to both the medical brand plan and local business needs.
  • Provide quality assurance controls, and operational assessment/analysis plans relevant to MA activities and deliverables.
  • Build a strong working relationship/partnership with affiliate TA leads to ensure alignment of field medical activities to the medical brand plan.
  • Proactively identifies and develops necessary processes and continuous framework enhancements to ensure consistent delivery of strategic scientific/medical leadership.
  • Actively build compliant and value-added bridges between internal colleagues by working to remove barriers to collaboration (i.e., facilitate connections, share best practices, build trust).
  • Serve as a core member of the local brand team as the MA Field representative by maintaining and communicating up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and practices; keeps abreast and proactively responds to market trends and/or shifts in the external medical affairs environment to maximize brand performance and patient impact.
  • In-depth customer experience knowledge and understanding of the healthcare system to recognize and adapt field strategies impacting traditional and emerging external medical stakeholders throughout the life cycle of the product.
  • Ensures field medical team is equipped to build and maintain strong external stakeholder engagement activities by overseeing the development, management and execution of robust strategic territory plans and supporting emerging digital capabilities, e.g., Omnichannel.
  • Ensures timely generation and communication of insights that inform brand/field strategies and activities.
  • Proactively monitors field team execution of meaningful field medical value metrics that measure MSL effectiveness and implements plan to optimize outcomes aligned to brand strategy
  • Knowledgeable on Astellas’ therapeutic areas, key compounds, disease states/patient journeys, and associated studies, clinical research methodologies and publications.
  • Knowledgeable of the relevant healthcare system(s) and competitor landscape for Astellas’ key compounds within the environment.
  • Proficient in scientific exchange to foster KEE relationships, to understand stakeholder needs in order to deliver medical brand plan, and to develop actionable medical insights.
  • Represent Voice of the Medical Community, based on the field interactions, to MA and cross divisional peers, as applicable.
  • Develop teams’ annual objectives in alignment with Divisional Objectives and medical brand plans.
  • Provide guidance and support for the team to meet their annual objectives.
  • Inspires the MA department, gains commitment to the MA value narrative and motivates them to consistently deliver a standard of excellence and superior results.
  • Utilizes a proactive approach to attracting, hiring, developing, and retaining a high-performing MSL department.
  • Supports growth and development experiences that prepares the department for broader responsibilities and creates initiatives to ensure the retention of strong performers.
  • Provides in-field coaching and timely feedback to ensure a productive, professional, and motivated team and a highly valued work environment.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, teamwork, and accountability with the Medical Affairs department to ensure commitment to MA excellence.

  • Collaborate with divisions outside of Development: Market Access Commercial Human Resources Legal Ethics & Compliance
