Learn more at The Teaching Assistant position at Greenwich House Pottery offers an opportunity for an emerging ceramic educator to gain hands-on classroom experience in ceramic-based studio courses, including wheel throwing, hand building, slip casting, mold making, and related technical or historical areas. Teaching Assistants are engaged for specific courses and serve for a defined period of time, ranging from a single class meeting to multi-week sessions. Assignments may include one-time introductory classes for adults and families, private events, or courses designed for specific populations such as children and teens (toddlers through high school), older adults, and therapeutic programs. Class schedules vary and may take place in the morning, afternoon, or evening, depending on program needs. Requirements

  • BFA in ceramics or equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Active artist/practitioner within the field of ceramics
  • Familiarity with community-based arts education programs
  • Strong organizational, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student body and staff at all levels
  • Preferably knowledgeable in ceramic processes including wheel throwing, hand building, slip casting, mold-making, glaze formulation, and kiln firing

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside instructors, shadowing lessons to support classroom learning
  • Follow established course curricula, syllabi, and annual course descriptions
  • Prepare materials and supplies and oversee classroom clean-up
  • Support students with individualized instruction as needed
  • Review GHP studio policies and guidelines and ensure appropriate classroom conduct
  • Communicate relevant issues, concerns, or suggestions to the instructor, Education Manager, or Studio Manager
  • Perform additional tasks and special projects as assigned by instructors, managers, or directors
  • Act as a liaison by shepherding student work from the classroom to the start of the firing process, following GHP procedures and protocols
  • Occasionally assist with post-class production tasks such as glazing, cleaning the bottoms of work, labeling student pieces, and related duties
