About The Position

The Institute for the Study of the Americas (ISA) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks to fill one full-time teaching assistant professor fixed-term position. The position will have an initial appointment for 3 years with the possibility of reappointment. We seek one candidate who can teach courses in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, with a strong preference for courses that center engaged, collaborative, and participatory research methods and public service. Preferred candidates will have expertise teaching topics including diaspora, migration, and mobilities; hemispheric politics and security; and/or climate, resources, and environment, as well as advanced courses in accordance with the instructor's areas of expertise. Successful candidates must be willing to teach at all undergraduate levels, including introductory through upper-level courses open to undergraduate and graduate students. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Latin American and Caribbean Studies or a related field with demonstrated regional focus at the time of appointment, and a strong commitment to and evidence of excellence in teaching. Experience teaching at the undergraduate level and advanced knowledge in the target course areas and evidence of prior classroom teaching effectiveness are required. The successful applicant will teach a total of 3 courses each semester (9 credit hours) to primarily undergraduate students for a total of 6 courses per academic year. All courses will be live, in-person instruction. The instructor will have the opportunity to engage in ISA's and university life by attending events, workshops, and lectures, and taking advantage of teaching and training resources available across campus. The instructor will serve on committees that support the Latin American and Caribbean Studies undergraduate major and graduate certificate programs, contribute to curriculum enhancement and development, and advise students in program of study, including experiential learning opportunities.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Latin American Studies or a related field.
  • Experience teaching and advising at the undergraduate level
  • Teaching and/or research experience in engaged and participatory research methods
  • Expertise in teaching topics described in position description
  • Evidence of prior classroom teaching effectiveness and excellence are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference will be given to candidates who have relevant course development experience and who have demonstrated expertise in the target course areas.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following languages: Spanish, Portuguese, creole, or a language native to the region preferred.
