About The Position

The Carl G. Grefenstette Center for Ethics in Science, Technology, and Law seeks a one-year postdoctoral fellow to join a community of researchers at the intersection of critical technology studies, critical AI studies, community technology, ethics, Christian theology, Catholic Social Teaching, and religious ethics more generally. Funded by a grant from the Hillman Foundation, this postdoctoral fellow will work on a substantial research project, as well as participate in the teaching life of the center. The program welcomes proposals from scholars working on substantial research projects related to the aforementioned subjects. Applicants from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply, including—but not limited to—Catholic theology, Christian theology, computer science, history and philosophy of science, philosophy, religious studies, science and technology studies, and sociology. The program is open to U.S. and international postdoctoral researchers. This is a one-year position with a possibility of renewal and is a hybrid position, requiring regular on-campus work.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Catholic theology, Christian theology, computer science, history and philosophy of science, philosophy, religious studies, science and technology studies, sociology, or related field from an accredited educational institution
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the University Community
  • Ability and willingness to contribute actively to the mission of the University and to respect the Spiritan Catholic identity of Duquesne University
  • Submission of a cover letter
  • Submission of a CV
  • Submission of a research proposal (no more than 2 single-spaced pages, not including references, describing planned research work, how it fits within the field, its potential impact, including a possible course or courses to teach, and a public engagement aspect)
  • Submission of contact information for three professional references

Responsibilities

  • Co-teach 1 class each semester
  • Teach a solo class in Spring 2027
  • Conduct research (solo and working with ED and student research assistants)
  • Participate in Center events and programs
  • Lead a colloquium on campus
  • Assist in the successful implementation of Center’s mission and vision
