Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Blind/Visually Impaired from a regionally accredited college or university required .
  • Hold or be eligible for educator certificate/license issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required .
  • Hold or be eligible for Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required .
  • Reliable Transportation ( required)

Nice To Haves

  • Hold or be eligible for Braille Transcriber Certificate (Literary Braille Transcriber) issued by National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS), Library of Congress preferred .
  • Hold or be eligible for Nemeth Code Certification issued by National Federation of the Blind (NFB) preferred .

Responsibilities

  • Provides instruction for Visually Impaired students by developing, selecting and modifying instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of students utilizing Braille, large print and technological devices.
  • Nature of work includes supervising students in a variety of school-related settings; keeps attendance and grade records, and conferring with parents, students and staff regarding progress/problems.
  • Frequent travel is required between multiple schools.
  • Develops, organizes, and delivers lesson plans, assignments, and instructional materials for students with visual impairments, including support for those in mainstream classrooms.
  • Contributes to curriculum design, pilots new teaching materials, creates staff awareness/orientation programs, and coordinates inter- and intra-agency support for students and families.
  • Applies a variety of teaching strategies to effectively present content.
  • Fosters a classroom environment that supports intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth.
  • Maintains classroom discipline to promote effective learning.
  • Communicates with parents and students regarding academic progress or concerns and participates in conferences as needed.
  • Conducts functional vision and learning media assessments.
  • Reviews and interprets eye medical reports to guide educational planning.
  • Participates actively in staff and faculty meetings, providing input on instructional goals, methods, and IEP development.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned within the same or lower classification.
