The Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS) is the juvenile corrections system for the state of Ohio, statutorily mandated to confine felony offenders aged 10-21. DYS aims to improve Ohio's future by habilitating youth and empowering families and communities, believing all youth can reach their greatest potential. Teachers at DYS are crucial to this mission, providing instruction and support to students who are typically 16-18 years old, in small class sizes of 6-8 students. The role involves assessing educational needs, developing lesson plans, providing individualized instruction, counseling students, and potentially monitoring extracurricular activities. DYS is committed to a trauma-responsive environment, staff development, and a culture of inclusion. Comprehensive paid training is provided for new hires, including a 6-week program with initial facility-based training and subsequent academy training (travel, lodging, and meals provided for academy portion). DYS is a qualifying employer for the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
