About The Position

The Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS) is the juvenile corrections system for the state of Ohio, statutorily mandated to confine felony offenders aged 10-21. DYS aims to improve Ohio's future by habilitating youth and empowering families and communities, believing all youth can reach their greatest potential. Teachers at DYS are crucial to this mission, providing instruction and support to students who are typically 16-18 years old, in small class sizes of 6-8 students. The role involves assessing educational needs, developing lesson plans, providing individualized instruction, counseling students, and potentially monitoring extracurricular activities. DYS is committed to a trauma-responsive environment, staff development, and a culture of inclusion. Comprehensive paid training is provided for new hires, including a 6-week program with initial facility-based training and subsequent academy training (travel, lodging, and meals provided for academy portion). DYS is a qualifying employer for the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree or less (for Teacher 1)
  • Baccalaureate degree & 20 additional quarter hrs. but less than master’s degree (for Teacher 2)
  • Master’s degree (for Teacher 3)
  • Master’s degree & 30 hrs. of post-graduate study (for Teacher 4)
  • Successfully obtain Teacher Certificate or License prior to employment
  • Complete a paid, mandatory 6 weeks of training
  • Undergo a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening

Responsibilities

  • Assess educational needs of youth
  • Develop and implement lesson plans to address those needs to include individualized assignments and training
  • Provide instruction with individual assistance
  • Counsel students concerning their performance, behavior and/or personal problems
  • Organize and/or monitor extracurricular activities if assigned
