About The Position

This open competitive advertisement is for a Career Service shared position located at both Holmes Correctional Institution and Northwest Florida Reception Center in the Education department. The mission of the Education Department in the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) is to provide high-quality educational programs and opportunities to inmates, aimed at enhancing their knowledge, skills, and abilities. This position is not a telework position and is required to report to the FDC office in the area it serves.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Possess or be eligible to apply for State of Florida Educator’s Certificate. Educator certification must be obtained within 12 months of hire date and certification must be maintained to remain in the class in accordance with FDC Procedure 501.103 and 944.801 (3)(k), F.S.
  • Support of knowledge, skills, and abilities should be demonstrated on the application, in the education, in the work experience, in the work sample, in the interview and/or during reference checks.

Responsibilities

  • Interview and obtain educational information for inmates 21 years of age or younger that enter the Department’s reception centers as new intakes. This may include administering career interest inventories, obtaining signed consent to receive educational records, and providing information on educational opportunities available at sites designated for special education.
  • Complete reception packet paperwork for all inmates under the age of 22.
  • Mail required IDEA documents to inmate’s parent/guardian/surrogate parent.
  • Explain TABE assessment results and career interest inventory results to verified special education inmates.
  • Contact school districts (in and out of state) to obtain documentation of the verified special education inmate’s previous public, private, or charter school records. The records requested shall consist of IEPs, transcripts, psychological evaluations, medical records, disciplinary referrals, matrixes, copies of high school or equivalent diplomas as available. Send a copy of the DC5-107 with the request(s) for student records from prior schools.
  • Retain all documentation received from school districts.
  • Attend conferences, workshops, technical assistance calls, and meetings for program improvement, professional development, and Special Education program operation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. Other duties shall be limited to those directly related to special education.
