We are seeking a motivated Tax Technology Automation Specialist to support Aprio's digital transformation within our tax practice. In this role, you will act as a key connector — bridging the gap between tax professionals, firm leadership, and technology — to identify opportunities, gather requirements, and deliver practical automation and reporting solutions that drive efficiency across the firm. This is a highly collaborative role that requires strong communication skills, the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, and a working knowledge of tax firm workflows, time and billing data, and generative AI platforms. You do not need to be a developer — but you do need to be curious, organized, and fluent in the language of both tax and technology.

Requirements

  • 2-4 years of experience in a technology, operations, consulting, or accounting firm environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, balancing competing priorities without losing quality or stakeholder trust.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable presenting to and facilitating discussions with partners, directors, and senior leadership.
  • Experience gathering, documenting, and translating business requirements into technology or process solutions.
  • Familiarity with tax software used in public accounting (e.g., CCH Axcess Tax, GoSystem, UltraTax CS, Lacerte, Practice Engine, SafeSend, or similar).
  • Working knowledge of a firm's time and billing data, tax workflow, and client lifecycle.
  • Hands-on experience using generative AI platforms (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT) in a professional context.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data organization and reporting.
  • Understanding of Project Management fundamentals and experience producing project methodology artifacts (charters, timelines, status updates).
  • Keen attention to detail and strong analytical problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in or consulting for a public accounting or professional services firm.
  • Familiarity with Office 365 ecosystem, including SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive.
  • Exposure to Microsoft Power Platform (Power BI, Power Automate).
  • Experience working with workflow or practice management tools (e.g., Practice Management, HubSync, Suralink, Aiwyn, TaxCaddy).
  • Basic understanding of APIs and how data moves between systems — no coding required, but conceptual familiarity is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Stakeholder Engagement & Requirements Gathering
  • Proactively engage with partners, directors, managers, and staff across the tax practice to understand business processes, pain points, and technology needs.
  • Serve as a trusted liaison between tax operations, IT, and development teams — translating business requirements into actionable project briefs.
  • Conduct structured interviews and working sessions with stakeholders at all levels to document current-state workflows and surface improvement opportunities.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with both technical and non-technical audiences, adapting communication style to the audience.
  • Project Ownership & Management
  • Own multiple concurrent projects end-to-end — from initial scoping through implementation, training, and adoption — without losing momentum across any of them.
  • Develop and manage project charters, timelines, and status updates for assigned initiatives; communicate progress clearly to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Serve in a project coordinator/manager capacity for key departmental initiatives, ensuring milestones are met and blockers are escalated promptly.
  • Drive organizational change and adoption by developing communication strategies and delivering effective training and socialization programs.
  • Generative AI & Automation Tooling
  • Leverage generative AI platforms — including Microsoft Copilot, Claude (Anthropic), and similar tools — to accelerate analysis, automate reporting, and build internal resources.
  • Use AI tools to generate workflow documentation, summarize stakeholder requirements, draft communications, and produce reports from tax and billing data.
  • Stay current on emerging generative AI capabilities relevant to accounting and tax, and bring forward practical recommendations for adoption.
  • Support the evaluation and piloting of new AI-powered platforms and workflow automation tools within the tax practice.
  • Leverage existing automation and integration tools to execute on projects — for example, using purpose-built utilities to import and process spreadsheets that update data across time and billing, workflow, and tax software platforms — reducing manual effort and improving data consistency across systems.
  • Tax Workflow & Data Understanding
  • Develop a working understanding of the firm's tax return lifecycle — including preparation, review, delivery, and e-file workflows — to identify process improvement opportunities.
  • Develop a working understanding of specialty tax practice areas — including State and Local Tax (SALT), Research & Development (R&D) credits — to identify workflow nuances, data requirements, and process improvement opportunities unique to each practice.
  • Gain familiarity with the firm's time and billing data, workflow systems, and tax software environments in order to contextualize reporting needs.
  • Work with stakeholders to define reporting requirements; use available tools — including AI platforms and Excel — to generate clear, actionable reports without needing to write code.
  • Understand data flows between tax software systems and internal platforms to identify automation opportunities and integration points.
  • Technology Evaluation & Continuous Improvement
  • Stay abreast of current and upcoming technology offerings in the tax and accounting industry, assessing their potential value for the firm.
  • Contribute to the development of test procedures to evaluate new software; gather feedback from users and synthesize findings into recommendations.
  • Foster a continuous improvement mindset across the teams you work with, helping staff adopt new tools and processes confidently.
  • Monitor adherence to departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines related to technology use and project delivery.
